EWING, NJ – The College of New Jersey women’s basketball team defeated visiting Rowan University, 66-45 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Saturday afternoon.
Guard/forward Sarah Best (jr. High Bridge, NJ/Voorhees) scored a game high 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for The College of New Jersey. Center Hillary Klimowicz (so. Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) contributed with 10 points. Forward Breanne Depken (sr. Oradell, NJ/River Dell) pulled down 12 rebounds and center Alexandra Gregorek (fr. Mahwah, NJ/Academy of Holy Angels) followed with 11.
TCNJ improves to 7-8 on the season and 2-3 in the NJAC. Rowan is 7-7 overall and 0-3 in the conference. For the Profs, guard Kristina Wallace (jr. Logan Twp., NJ/Clearview Reg.) totaled 11 points and six assists. Forward Lauren Byrne (sr. Paulsboro, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) compiled a game high 13 rebounds.
The Lions had a three-point lead at the half (32-29). In the second period, TCNJ outscored Rowan,
34-16. Klimowicz’s layup made the score 39-31 at 17:14. The Profs trailed by four points (39-35) at 16:30 after a Wallace basket. TCNJ answered with 16 straight points for a 20 point advantage (55-35) with 7:25 left. Seven different players contributed in the run. The Lions had their biggest lead of 22 points (3:00) with Best’s layup.
There were three ties in the first half with the last one (12-12) at 11:17. Rowan guard Susan Massara (jr. Hammonton, NJ/Hammonton) made a layup that tied the score. Guard Alyssa Michella (so. Washington Twp., NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy) retook the lead for the Lions with a three-pointer at 10:03. With 6:43 remaining, TCNJ was up 21-16. The Lions had a 9-3 run to lead by 11 (30-19) at 3:49. Rowan came back with a 10-2 surge and was down by three (32-29) at the end of the half. Guard Brynn DeGroff (so. Wildwood Crest, NJ/Wildwood) had the last basket, a three, at the 10 second mark.
Rowan is back home on Wednesday, January 17 against Kean University in a 6 p.m. conference game.
