GLASSBORO, NJ – Three players scored in double figures to lead Rowan University over Rutgers-Camden, 70-60 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) contest on Wednesday night.
Forward Matt Byrnes (jr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) led the Profs with 20 points. Byrnes moved up to 10th place on the school’s all-time scorers list with 1,255 points. He surpassed Robert Scott (1994-98) with 1,244 points. Guards Dan Reddan (so. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) and Thomas Baker (sr. Millville, NJ/Millville) each contributed with 13 points. Forward Rahim Shiver (so. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill E.) grabbed seven rebounds and Baker followed with six.
Rowan is 10-2 overall (1-1 NJAC) with a seven game win streak. Rutgers-Camden has an overall record of 4-11 and a 0-4 conference mark.
For Rutgers-Camden, guard Dane Nicholson (sr. Pleasantville, NJ/Holy Spirit) totaled 19 points that included his 1,000th career point. Nicholson is the 13th player at the school to score 1,000 and he has 1,005. Forward Sydney Francis (sr. Camden, NJ/Woodrow Wilson) and guard Rory Thornton (fr. Vauxhall, NJ/Union) added 12 points apiece. Guard Joshua Askew (fr. Sicklerville, NJ/Winslow Twp.) was in double digits with 10 points. Francis pulled down a game-high 11 boards. Nicholson also dished six assists.
At the half, Rutgers-Camden was ahead 37-31. Askew hit a three-pointer that put the Scarlet Raptors up by eight (42-34) at 17:11. The Profs came back with eight straight points to tie the game at 42 (15:07). Reddan and Bowser each had three points and Shiver had two. Guard Tarell Robinson (jr. Irvington, NJ/St. Benedict’s Prep) made two foul shots to give Rutgers-Camden a two-point advantage (44-42) at 14:22. It was the Scarlet Raptors’ last lead of the game. Baker’s jumper at 14:11 made the score 44-44. Baker added three straight baskets and Reddan had two free throws to put Rowan up 52-44 with 9:16 remaining. Rutgers-Camden trailed by four (54-50) after a three by Nicholson at 6:06. Nicholson finished the game with six three-pointers. Rowan’s biggest lead was 11 points (68-57) when Reddan made the second of two foul shots with 35 seconds on the clock. Baker finished the second period with 11 points while Reddan had 10.
There were three ties in the first half before Rutgers-Camden took the lead at 8:11. Reddan had two free throws that made the score 19-19. Nicholson’s three-pointer gave the Scarlet Raptors a three-point advantage (22-19). Rutgers-Camden led by nine points (35-26) after a three-pointer by Thornton with 1:52 left. Byrnes made a three (1:16), Askew hit a layup (0:06) and Shiver had a basket at the buzzer. Nicholson ended the first half with 13 points and Thornton had 10. Byrnes led Rowan with 11 points.
Rowan travels to The College of New Jersey on Saturday, January 13 for a 3 p.m. conference game.
