Rowan Wins Opener, 3-0 Over Greensboro

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University women’s soccer team opened the 2006 season with a 3-0 shutout over visiting Greensboro College.

The Profs had three different players that scored. Midfielder Kaitlyn Florio (so. Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City) put Rowan on the scoreboard at 15:10. Florio hit the left side of the Pride’s net on a cross from forward Karen Patruno (sr. Somerdale, NJ/Paul VI). In the second half, midfielder Krista Verzi (fr. Delran, NJ/Delran) headed in the next goal at 65:59 with an assist from back Tricia Egler (jr. Voorhees, NJ/Eastern Reg.). At 80:23, forward Samantha Becker (jr. Sicklerville, NJ/Highland Reg.) hit the back of the net with a shot to the lower left corner. Midfielder Jamie Weist (sr. Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape Reg.) had the assist on the third goal.

With just under 16 minutes left in the game, Greensboro had its best chance of spoiling the shutout. Midfielder Mary Sandifer (so. Washington, DC/Good Counsel) had a shot that hit the crossbar on a corner kick by midfielder Santina Doldo (jr. Watertown, NY/Immaculate Heart).

Rowan finished the game with 26 total shots while Greensboro had two. Goalie Melissa Hall (so. Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) made one stop for her first shutout. For the Pride, Shana Saganich (so. McLeansville, NC/Northeast Guilford) recorded 12 saves in 80 minutes. Kristen McGuire (sr. Sewell, NJ/Washngton Twp.) was in net for the remainder of the contest and made three saves.

The game was delayed a day because of the weather and field conditions and was played on the University’s turf field. Rowan’s next game is at home on Wednesday, September 6 against Washington College (MD) at 7 p.m.
