GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University field hockey team upset second ranked Salisbury University, 2-1 at home on Tuesday. Both of the goals were scored by forward Kiley Graham.
The Profs ended the Sea Gulls’ 19 game win streak that carried over from last season (10 games). Salisbury (9-1) is the defending NCAA Division III champion and it has won three straight national titles. Last year, Salisbury finished with a 21-1 record. Rowan (6-2) is ranked ninth in this week’s National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Coaches Poll.
Graham (so. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) put the Profs up 1-0 at 21:04. She knocked the ball into the lower left corner of the Salisbury cage during a scramble. The Sea Gulls tied the score on a penalty corner (23:36). Back Danielle Twilley (jr. Delmar, DE/Delmar) scored the goal on a pass from back Kristina Holland (jr. Pocomoke, MD/Pocomoke). It was Twilley’s third goal this year.
At 63:58, Graham tipped in a shot by midfielder Susan Massara (jr. Hammonton, NJ/Hammonton). Graham has four goals on the season while Massara has seven assists.
Salisbury totaled 17 shots and Rowan had eight. In the second half, the Sea Gulls outshot the Profs, 12-4. Rowan goalie Amanda Cucinotti (jr. Voorhees, NJ/Cherry Hill E.) stopped six shots and Salisbury goalie Maria Ramoundos (jr. Gloucester, NJ/Highland Reg.) made two saves.
Next Rowan travels to Wesley College (DE) on Thursday, September 28 for a 4 p.m. nonconference game.
