NJCU Beats Rowan On Penalty Kick In Overtime, 2-1

JERSEY CITY, NJ – Midfielder Cristhian Acuna scored on a penalty kick in overtime for New Jersey City University in a 2-1 conference victory over Rowan University.

Acuna (so. East Newark, NJ/Harrison) recorded the game winner with 3:23 left in the second overtime. New Jersey City University has an overall record of 7-1 and a 2-0 mark in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. Rowan is 6-3-1 on the season and 0-2-1 in the conference. This week, NJCU was ranked fifth in the Metro Region while Rowan was ninth.

The Profs went up 1-0 on forward Robert McMullen’s (sr. Barrington, NJ/Northern Burlington) goal at 3:28 that was assisted by goalie Anthony Clemente (sr. Kendall Park, NJ/South Brunswick). The Gothic Knights tied the score at 70:28 when forward Juan Zuniga (sr. Passaic, NJ/Passaic) hit the lower left corner of the Rowan net. The goal was assisted by forward Frank Rosenthal (fr. Kearny, NJ/Kearny) and Acuna.

NJCU took 29 shots while Rowan had 12. Clemente finished the game with five saves. For the Gothic Knights, Bruce Nevens (jr. Newark, NJ/Hudson Catholic) made three saves.

Next week, Rowan travels to Richard Stockton College for a conference game on Wednesday, September 27 at 8 p.m.
