STEVENSON, MD – The Rowan University field hockey team opened the season with a 4-0 shutout over Wittenberg University at the Black-Eyed Susan Tournament on Saturday. The two-day tournament is hosted by Villa Julie College.
On Sunday, Rowan will play Neumann College at 2 p.m. Neumann had a 3-2 win over Villa Julie on Saturday.
Forward Danielle Miranda (jr. Flanders, NJ/Mount Olive) led Rowan with three goals while midfielder Colleen McGowan (sr. Woodstown, NJ/Woodstown, NJ) scored once. Rowan outshot Wittenberg, 27-2. Goalie Amanda Cucinotti (jr. Voorhees, NJ/Cherry Hill E.) had one save in the Profs’ net. For Wittenberg, Sarah Umberger (fr. Concord, NH/Derryfield School) stopped 7 shots.
In the first half, Miranda gave Rowan a 1-0 lead when she scored on a penalty stroke at 11:23. She went on to score two more times in the second period. At 36:13, Miranda had an assist from forward Kiley Graham (so. Medford, NJ/Shawnee). Midfielder Kim Brozosky (so. Richwood, NJ/Clearview Reg.) recorded the second assist at 47:48. McGowan found the net at 53:13 on a pass from midfielder Jennifer Lipnickey (so. Chester, NJ/West Morris-Mendham).
