Rowan Swimming Takes Two Over Swarthmore

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University men and women’s swimming teams defeated Swarthmore University on Saturday. The men won by a score of 146-102. The women posted a score of 144-107 for the victory.

The win improves the men’s record to 3-2 and the women are now 4-1. For Swarthmore, the men and women are both 4-2.

The Rowan men won the 200 medley relay (1:40.04) and the 200 freestyle relay (1:30.48). Kevin Baker (jr. Landing, NJ/Roxbury), Kevin Ovalle (jr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson), Kevin Wallace (so. Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape Reg.) and Sam Spracklin (fr. Westampton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) made up the medley relay. The freestyle relay was Spracklin, Ovalle, Dan Kelley (jr. Pittsgrove, NJ/A.P. Schalick) and Nick Giacopelli (sr. Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough).

Baker also finished first in the 200 freestyle (1:45.79), 200 breaststroke (2:11.66) and 200 individual medley (IM) (1:59.31). The men swept the 50 freestyle with Kelley first in 22.16, Spracklin second in 22.64, and Giacopelli third with a time of 22.83. Kelley also finished first in the 100 freestyle in 49.32 with Giacopelli second (49.92). Billy Swenson (so. Scotch Plains, NJ/St. Joseph) swam to first place finishes in the 100 (55.72) and 200 backstroke (2:00.02). James Sheerin (jr. Cranford, NJ/Cranford) was first in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:00.50 and the 500 freestyle in 4:56.26. Wallace came in first in the 100 butterfly (54.45). Jeremy Soto (fr. Tenafly, NJ/Tenafly) was second in the 200 backstroke (2:09.93). Mark Anthony Spagnuolo (sr. West Orange, NJ/Bloomfield) and Andrew Williams (jr. Bensalem, PA/Father Judge) finished second and third in the 100 breaststroke with times of 1:03.41 and 1:05.15, respectively. In the 1000 freestyle, Andrew Donachy (fr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River N.) came in second (10:32.17) and Shane McGrath (sr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) placed third in 10:44.62.

The Rowan women won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:54.16. The relay was comprised of Stephanie McAllister (fr. Mickleton, NJ/Kingsway Reg.), Meghan McCourt (fr. Wenonah, NJ/Gloucester Catholic), Janina Wojcik (so. Toms River, NJ/Toms River N.) and Christine DiRubbo (jr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee). Wojcik, Alicia Mackleer (so. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest), DiRubbo, and Aileen Milde (jr. Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) finished first in the 200 freestyle relay (1:42.78).

McAllister also swam to first place finishes in the 100 (1:02.35) and 200 backstroke (2:16.49). She finished third in the 100 butterfly in 1:03.90. Ashley Gagnon (fr. South Amboy, NJ/Middlesex County Academy) took first place in three events. She won the 200 freestyle in 2:01.52, the 500 freestyle in 5:23.64, and the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:10.64. Samantha King (fr. Marmora, NJ/Ocean City) and Mackleer won two events each. King won the 200 breaststroke in 2:32.73 and the 200 IM (2:16.66). Mackleer was first in the 50 and 100 freestyle in 25.41 and 55.41, respectively. Milde finished second behind Gagnon in the 200 freestyle (2:02.88) and she was third in the 100 freestyle with a time of 56.95. Wojcik was second in the 100 butterfly (1:01.40) and third in the 50 freestyle (25.96). Caitlin Ayres (sr. Randolph, NJ/Randolph) took third in both the 200 butterfly (2:13.00) and the 500 freestyle (5:25.62). McCourt finished third in the 200 breaststroke in 2:37.43.
