Rowan Wins Heritage's Dairy Stores Classic

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University men’s basketball team won the Heritage’s Dairy Stores Classic with a 95-66 victory over Penn State Delaware County.

In the consolation game, Valley Forge Christian College defeated Newport News Apprentice School, 91-84. On Friday, Penn State Delaware County had a 78-68 win over Valley Forge Christian College in the first round while Rowan won 86-76 against Newport News Apprentice.

Rowan’s Thomas Baker (sr. Millville, NJ/Millville) was named the Most Valuable Player. Baker was joined on the All-Tournament team by Prof guards Tim Bowser (sr. Millville, NJ/Millville) and Dan Reddan (so. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.). Penn State guard Tim Forrest and Newport News guard Termaine Totten were also chosen to the All-Tournament team.

Five players scored in double figures to lead Valley Forge Christian (6-8) over Newport News (0-6). Guard James Fulton was the leader with 21 points and eight rebounds. Forward Steve Pierantozzi contributed with 19 points and eight boards. Guard Justyn Mitchell totaled 18 points and dished five assists. Guard Michael Wilkerson added 14 points and forward Eric Addison had 12.

For Newport News, guard Termaine Totten recorded a game high 26 points. Forward Terrance Byrant compiled 13 points and seven rebounds. Forward Donnell Gilchrist had a double double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

The first half ended tied at 36. In the second stanza, the Patriots went up by 11 (55-44) after a three-pointer by Wilkerson with 13:56 remaining. Fulton made the score, 60-52, when he made two foul shots at 11:08. The Builders came back with eight straight points to tie the score at 60 (8:24). Totten started and ended the run with a three and forward Thomas Crawford had two free throws. Mitchell’s three-pointer restored Valley Forge Christian’s lead (63-60) with 7:09 left. The Patriots had a nine point advantage (79-70) after Pierantozzi was good for two foul shots at 3:12. With 19 seconds on the clock, the Builders trailed by five points (87-82) after guard Nolan Thompson’s two free throws. Valley Forge Christian ended the game with a 4-2 run. Mitchell was perfect with four free throws in four attempts. Thompson hit a jumper for Newport News.

Forward Thomas Baker (sr. Millville, NJ/Millville) led Rowan (5-2) with 21 points in the championship game against Penn State Delaware County (6-3). Baker totaled 52 points in the two games of the classic. Guard Dan Reddan (so. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) scored 13 points while guards Tim Bowser (sr. Millville, NJ/Millville) and Kevin Darby (so. Atco, NJ/Hammonton) each had 12 points. Bowser grabbed nine rebounds while Reddan dished six assists.

For Penn State, guard Tim Forrest scored a game-high 27 points that included four three-pointers. Forward Joshua Etheridge compiled 14 points and forward Jamil Nelson followed with 12. Center Sean Sweeny pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.

Rowan outscored Penn State in the second half, 52-29. The Profs started the period with seven straight points to lead 50-37 at 18:45. Baker had four points and Reddan made three. At 13:44, the Profs were ahead by 16 points (64-48). Rowan had eight straight points for a 24 point advantage (72-48) with 11:38 remaining. Darby scored four points in the run. The closest the Lions came was 13 points (74-61) at 6:32. Rowan had its biggest lead of the game, 29 points, at the end when forward Tim Cook (fr. Glassboro, NJ/Glassboro) made a jumper and foul shot. In the final period, Reddan led Rowan with 11 points.

The score was tied twice in the first half before Rowan took the lead for good. Baker’s jumper tied the game at 16 with 9:35 remaining. He had a basket that put the Profs ahead 20-16 at 8:18. Rowan led by 11 (32-21) after Bowser’s layup at 4:13. Penn State came back to trail by four (41-37) after Forrest made two fouls shots with two seconds on the clock. Guard Dan Reddan (so. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) hit a jumper at the buzzer that gave Rowan a six point advantage (43-37) at the intermission. Baker and Forrest each totaled 13 points in the first half.

On Tuesday, December 12, Rowan University hosts Cabrini College at 7 p.m.
