Rowan And Penn State Delco Win In Heritage's Dairy Stores Classic First Round

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University men’s basketball team defeated Newport News Apprentice, 86-76 in the second game of the Heritage’s Dairy Stores Classic. In the opening game, Penn State-Delaware County topped Valley Forge Christian, 78-68.

Rowan will play PSU-Delaware County in the championship on Saturday at 3 p.m. Valley Forge Christian will go up against Newport News in the consolation game at 1 p.m.

First Game - Penn State Delaware County 78, Valley Forge Christian 68

Guard Tim Forrest scored a game high 33 points, grabbed five rebounds and had five steals to lead PSU-Delaware County. Center Sean Sweeny posted a double-double, with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Sweeny added five assists and four steals. Forward Jamil Nelson contributed eight points and five rebounds. Forward Joshua Etheridge had seven points and six boards.

Forward Steve Pierantozzi led Valley Forge Christian with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Forward Chris Freeman had 10 points and six boards. Guards James Fulton and Michael Wilkerson and forward Joshua Osborn had nine points each.

Second Game - Rowan 86, Newport News Apprentice 76

Rowan was led by guard Thomas Baker (sr. Millville, NJ/Millville) who had a game high 31 points, four assists and four rebounds. Guard Matt Byrnes (jr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) scored 17 points and had five rebounds. Point guard Billy Care (so. Linwood, NJ/Mainland Reg.) had a game high 11 assists. Care added nine points and seven boards. Guard Dan Reddan (so. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) contributed 13 points.

Forward Terrance Bryant recorded a double-double, 21 points and 10 rebounds, to lead Newport News. Bryant was 10-11 from the field. Guard Termaine Totten was the Builders leading scorer with 27 points, 15 from beyond the arc. Guard Nolan Thompson added eight points.

Rowan took a 13-6 lead six minutes into the first half following a three pointer by guard Tim Bowser (sr. Millville, NJ/Millville). The Builders’ Fred Spatley responded with a three pointer to cut the lead to four (13-9). The Profs followed with two quick layups by Bowser and Byrnes to extend their lead to 17-9 with 13:11 remaining. Newport went on a 10-2 run over the next 4:27 to tie the game at 19. Guard Javius Dixon and Totten hit consecutive three pointers in the stretch. Rowan answered with five straight points capped by forward Rahim Shiver’s (so. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill E.) free throw to retake the lead at 24-19 with 5:59 left. The Profs upped the tempo over the final three minutes scoring eight fast break points to extend their lead to 12 at the half (39-27).

The teams alternated baskets for the first 5:55 of the second half as Rowan maintained its 12 point advantage (51-39). In the next 4:03, the Builders went on a 12-3 run, capped by a Reggie Bell jumper, to cut the deficit to three (54-51). Newport News would never get closer. The Profs outscored the Builders 20-8 over the next 5:23 to take a 74-59 lead. Totten tried to keep Newport News in the game with three of his five three pointers coming in the next 2:14, but Rowan held its lead down the stretch to win 86-76.
