Rowan Loses Conference Opener To Ramapo, 83-73

MAHWAH, NJ – Three players scored in double figures to lead Ramapo College over Rowan University, 83-73 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) contest.

The Roadrunners came back in the second half to outscore the Profs, 41-26 for the victory. Ramapo has an overall record of 6-1 and a 2-1 NJAC mark. Rowan is 3-2 on the season and 0-1 in the conference.

For Ramapo, center Omar Alston (jr. Carteret, NJ/Carteret) scored a game-high 24 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Guard John Wojcik (sr. Sayreville, NJ/Sayreville) came off the bench and had 21 points that included six-three pointers. Forward Tim Wesley (so. Jersey City, NJ/Lincoln) was in double figures with 16 points. Guard Antoine Pryor (sr. Elizabeth, NJ/Saint Patrick) dished seven assists.

Guard Thomas Baker (sr. Millville, NJMillville, NJ) led Rowan with 16 points. Guard Billy Care (so. Lindwood, NJ/Mainland Reg.) contributed with 11 points and forward Rahim Shiver (so. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill E.) had 10. Shiver also compiled nine rebounds.

At the intermission, Ramapo trailed by five points (47-42). The Roadrunners came back to tie the score at 59 with 13:20 remaining. Pryor’s first foul shot tied it and the second put Ramapo up by one. The Roadrunners led by five points (67-62) on Alston’s jumper at the 10 minute mark. At 5:42, Ramapo was ahead 74-69. The Roadrunners pulled away with a 9-2 run for a 12 point advantage (83-71) with 1:25 left. Wesley scored six points and Pryor had three. Alston totaled 16 points in the final period.

In the first half, guard Matt Byrnes (jr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) tied the score (4-4) with a jumper at 18:19. Baker followed with a basket that gave the Profs the lead that they held for the remainder of the stanza. At 16:30, Baker’s layup made the score 12-4. Rowan led by 11 points (21-10) after guard Santini Lancioni (fr. Burlington, NJ/Paul VI) hit a three. Baker had a basket at 8:01 that put Rowan ahead 32-19. The Profs’ biggest lead was 14 points (46-32) after Byrnes nailed two free throws. Ramapo closed the half with a 10-1 run that included two three-pointers by Wojcik.

Rowan will host the Heritage’s Dairy Stores Classic on Friday -Saturday, December 8-9. In the first round on Friday, Penn State Delaware County plays Valley Forge Christian College at 6 p.m. followed by Newport News Apprentice against Rowan at 8 p.m. The consolation is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday and the championship is at 3 p.m.
