CHESTER, PA – Rowan University defeated Widener University, 62-54 in a nonconference game on Saturday.
Rowan improves to 6-3, while Widener has a 4-6 record. The Profs were led by forward Lauren Byrne (sr. Paulsboro, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) with 15 points and eight rebounds. Guard Kristina Wallace (jr. Logan Twp., NJ/Clearview Reg.) added 11 points, six assists and five steals. Forward Jessica Nimbley (fr. Middletown, NJ/St. John Vianney) contributed nine points and 12 boards.
For the Pride, guard Megan Sipple (so. Boothwyn, PA/Chichester) posted 14 points. Center Becky Tyler (fr. Wynnewood, PA/Harriton) totaled 13 points and eight rebounds. Guard Beth Dessart Mager (so. Newtown Square, PA/Cardinal O’Hara) added 13 points and eight boards. Forward Stephanie Bixby (jr. Boothwyn, PA/Chichester) pulled down 12 rebounds.
The game was tied at 27-27 after the first half. There were two more ties in the second stanza with the last one at 7:39 (39-39). Rowan scored six straight points to lead 45-39 (6:08). Guard Michelle Lala (fr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills) and Byrne each had three points. The closest the Pride would come was four points (45-41) at 5:34. The Profs went on a 6-1 run for a 51-42 advantage with 3:07 left to play. Rowan’s biggest lead came with 31 seconds remaining (59-48) after a made free throw by guard Nicole Perrini (jr. Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany Hills).
In the first half, Rowan led 14-13 at 11:40. Widener compiled an 11-4 run over the next six minutes for a 24-18 advantage. Dessart Mager had six points in the stretch. The Profs made the score 25-25 with 1:38 left in the half following a layup by Byrne. Lala made two free throws for a two point lead (27-27) with 32 seconds on the clock. Pride guard Lindsey Isler’s (fr. New Hope, PA/New Hope-Solebury) layup with 25 seconds remaining tied the game at halftime.
Tyler led all first half scorers with seven points. Sipple and Dessart Mager each totaled six points. For Rowan, Byrne and DeGroff recorded six points apiece.
