Rowan Tops Kings In First Round Of NCAA Championship Tournament, 2-0

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University field hockey defeated King’s College (PA), 2-0 in the first round of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.

Rowan will play SUNY Cortland in the second round on Saturday, November 8 at 11 a.m. The game will be played at Ursinus College in Collegeville, PA. In other first round action, Kenyon College topped Juniata College, 1-0 in overtime and will face Ursinus College in the second round on Saturday at 2 p.m. The two second round winners will play on Sunday at 1 p.m.

After a scoreless first half, forward Danielle Miranda (jr. Flanders, NJ/Mount Olive) tipped in a shot by back Erin Tideman (jr. Voorhees, NJ/Eastern Reg.) to give Rowan a 1-0 lead at 52:40. It was Miranda’s 20th goal of the season. The Profs added an insurance goal at 68:55 when forward Rachel Cheafsky (jr. Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City) put back a shot from in front of the goal off a pass from midfielder Susan Massara (jr. Hammonton, NJ/Hammonton). The Monarchs were led by forward Debbie Wychok (jr. Wilkes-Barre, PA/Daniel Boone), who totaled eight shots.

Rowan outshot King’s, 29-11. Profs’ goalie Amanda Cucinotti (jr. Voorhees, NJ/Cherry Hill E.) stopped three shots for her seventh shutout. Goalie Kari Leach (so. Milford, PA/Delaware Valley) made 12 saves for the Monarchs.

With the win, Rowan improves to 15-5. The Profs received an at-large bid to the national tournament. It is Rowan’s 14th appearance in the NCAA tournament. King’s finishes the season with a 19-4 mark. The Monarchs won the Freedom Conference Championship to earn an automatic bid to the national tournament. It was King’s first playoff appearance.
