BROOKLYN, NY – Guard Matt Byrnes scored a game-high 37 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead Rowan University over host Medgar Evers College, 93-73 in a nonconference game.
Byrnes (jr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) was 11 for 18 from the floor with five three-pointers and 10 for 12 from the line. Guard Thomas Baker (sr. Millville, NJ/Millville) contributed with 22 points while guard Tim Bowser (sr. Millville, NJ/Millville) added 10.
Medgar Evers had four players that scored in double figures. Kallai Sharpe was the leader with 18 points followed by Thomas Armstrong with 15. Kenneth Griffin totaled 14 points and Jamaal Jessimy had 11. The Cougars were led on the boards by Julius Johnson with seven rebounds.
The score was tied twice in the first half with the last tie at 13 after Byrnes made two foul shots with 15:36 left. Medgar Evers took the lead on Griffin’s foul shot (15:28) and Jessimay’s three (14:51). Byrnes nailed two three-pointers that put the Profs ahead 19-17. At 8:45, Rowan led by eight (31-23) after another three by Brynes. The Profs’ biggest lead of the half was 11 points (45-34) after Baker made the second of two free throws. Byrnes ended the period with 24 points and Baker had 10.
The Cougars pulled within seven points (50-43) in the second half after Sharpe’s three-pointer. Rowan had a 12-5 run for a 14 point advantage (13:49). Baker scored the last five points in the surge. After two foul shots by Bowser, the Profs were up by 19 points (77-58). Rowan’s biggest lead of the game was 26 points (92-66) after Baker’s jumper with 2:53 left.
Rowan improves to 2-1 on the season while Medgar Evers has a 1-1 record. The Profs return to action when they host Philadelphia Biblical University on Wednesday, November 29 at 7 p.m.
