Rowan And Elizabethtown Advance In Holiday Inn Tip-Off Tournament

GLASSBORO, NJ – In the opening game of the Holiday Inn Runnemede Tip-Off Tournament, the Rowan University women’s basketball team defeated Brooklyn College, 81-36. Elizabethtown College topped Neumann College, 74-49 in the second game.

Rowan will play Elizabethtown in the championship game on Saturday, November 18 at 7 p.m. Brooklyn will face Neumann in the consolation game at 5 p.m.

First Game – Rowan 81, Brooklyn 36

Rowan was led by forward Lauren Byrne (sr. Paulsboro, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Guard Kristina Wallace (jr. Logan Twp., NJ/Clearview Reg.) added 13 points and seven assists. Center Katie Shaw (jr. Wallington, NJ/Wallington) contributed nine points and 13 rebounds.

For Brooklyn, guard Christina McDonnell (fr. Staten Island, NY/Staten Island Tech) posted 14 points. Guard Jaclyn Cavalcante (jr. Brooklyn, NJ/James Madison) scored 11 points, while forward Ryane Hecker (so. Corona, NY/St. Francis Prep) had seven rebounds.

In the first half, Rowan jumped out to an early 6-0 at 17:19 after two foul shots by Byrne. The Profs went on a 16-6 run over the next nine minutes to make the score 22-6 at 8:37. Guard Brynn DeGroff (so. Wildwood Crest, NJ/Wildwood) and Kaitlin Guy (so. Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) each had two points in the stretch. Rowan’s biggest lead was 32-10 following a layup by forward Ashley Cieplicki (so. Haworth, NJ/Dumont) with five minutes left. Brooklyn came within 10 points with 29 seconds remaining after a three pointer by Cavalcante.

Rowan scored the first 19 points of the second half. Wallace scored seven points and Byrne had six in the run. The Profs had their biggest lead of 45 points with 44 seconds remaining.

Second Game – Elizabethtown 74, Neumann 49

Elizabethtown had four players score in double digits. Guard Erin Walton (jr. Columbus, NJ/Northern Burlington) led the way with 18 points. Guards Megan Quinn (so. Millersville, PA/Penn Manor) and Megan Romano (so. Jenkintown, PA/Jenkintown) scored 15 and 12 points respectively. Forward Jenn Montague (so. Newark, DE/St. Mark’s) added 12 points and 11 rebounds. Forward Audrey Hitz (jr. Lebanon, PA/Annville-Cleona) chipped in eight points and 12 boards.

Guard Brittany Whetts (fr. Philadelphia, PA/Bartram) posted 16 points and six rebounds for Neumann. Guard Syreeta Brown (jr. Wilmington, DE/St. Elizabeth) contributed 12 points on four three pointers and had five steals.
