COLLEGEVILLE, PA – The SUNY Cortland field hockey team eliminated Rowan University from the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament with a 4-2 win on Saturday.
The Red Dragons were led by forward Kayla Chambers (so. Craryville, NY/Taconic Hills) with two goals. Forward Kelli Johnson (sr. Elma, NY/Iroquois Central) and midfielder Jackie Plunkett (fr. Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West) added one goal apiece. Forward Lauren Eichenberger (fr. Suffern, NY/Suffern) contributed two assists, while forward Brit Paulus (sr. Pleasantville, NY/Pleasantville) had one.
Forward Danielle Miranda (jr. Flanders, NJ/Mount Olive) scored her 21st goal of the year for the Profs. Back Erin Tideman (jr. Voorhees, NJ/Eastern Reg.) also had one score. Back Jennifer Lipnickey (so. Chester, NJ/West Morris-Mendham) and forward Rachel Cheafsky (jr. Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City) each had one assist.
Cortland went ahead 1-0 at 11:09 in the first half when Chambers knocked in a cross from Paulus. Plunkett had an unassisted goal at 25:17 and Johnson converted a shot from the top of the circle off a pass from Eichenberger at 31:11 to give Cortland a 3-0 halftime lead.
In the second half, Tideman found the back of the cage on a penalty corner by Lipnickey. Chambers added an insurance goal for Cortland at 63:44 with an assist from Eichenberger. With 26 seconds remaining, Miranda scored off a feed from Cheafsky.
Cortland outshot Rowan, 11-9. Goalie Stacy Billings (so. Marathon, NY/Marathon) made three saves for the Red Dragons. Goalie Amanda Cucinotti (jr. Voorhees, NJ/Cherry Hill E.) stopped five shots in the Profs’ net.
SUNY Cortland is undefeated with a 19-0 record and will face the winner of the Ursinus College/Kenyon College game on Sunday, November 12 at 1 p.m. in Collegeville, PA. Rowan finishes the season with a 15-6 record. In the first round, Rowan defeated King’s College (PA), 2-0 at home. It was the Profs’ 14th appearance in the national tournament.
