Rowan Swimming Tops Salisbury

SALISBURY, MD – The Rowan University men and women’s swimming teams defeated host Salisbury University on Tuesday. The men had a 160-103 victory, while the women posted a 163-121 win.

The men broke the pool record in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:53.54. The relay consisted of Christopher Sykes (sr. Haworth, NJ/Northern Valley Reg.), Kevin Baker (jr. Landing, NJ/Roxbury), Dave Shinton (jr. Newark, DE/Newark) and Dan Kelley (jr. Pittsgrove, NJ/A.P. Schalick). The team of Stephen Tucker (fr. Pittsgrove, NJ/Sacred Heart), Kevin Ovalle (jr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson), Kelley and Andrew Williams (jr. Bensalem, PA/Father Judge) also took first in the 400 free relay in 3:48.45.

Baker won three individual events. He set a new pool record in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:30.09. Baker also finished first in the 200 individual medley (IM) (2:18.47) and the 100 breaststroke (1:09.71). Andrew Donachy (fr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River N.) captured first place in both the 200 (2:04.55) and 400 freestyle (4:26.94). Wallace also had two victories, taking first in the 100 and 200 butterfly in 59.84 and 2:19.45 respectively.

Patrick Buck (so. Eastampton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) won the 800 freestyle in 9:32.56, followed by Will Makar (so. Branchburg, NJ/Somerville) second (10:13.00). Sykes finished first in the 100 backstroke (1:04.69) and Kelly and Billy Swenson (so. Scotch Plains, NJ/St. Joseph) were second (1:05.51) and third (1:06.12) respectively. Ovalle took first in the 50 free (25.41), while Williams was second (25.79). Robert Besner (fr. S. Amboy, NJ/St. Joseph) claimed first place in the 100 freestyle in 57.40, with Kelly second (57.46). Swenson came in first in the 200 backstroke (2:20.08), followed by Jeremy Soto (fr. Tenafly, NJ/Tenafly) second (2:22.55) and Sykes third (2:29.51).

The women’s 200 medley (2:08.85) and 400 freestyle relays (4:11.81) took first place. The medley relay consisted of Stephanie McAllister (fr. Mickleton, NJ/Kingsway Reg.), Samantha King (fr. Marmora, NJ/Ocean City), Aileen Milde (jr. Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) and Alicia Mackleer (so. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest). Christine DiRubbo (jr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee), Mackleer, Milde and Janina Wojcik (so. Toms River, NJ/Toms River N.) made up the free relay.

McAllister had first place finishes in the 100 (1:11.94) and 200 backstroke (2:32.65). Wojcik won the 50 freestyle in 28.63 and the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:09.62. King came in first in the 100 breaststroke (1:19.08) and 200 IM (2:32.94). Caitlin Ayres (sr. Randolph, NJ/Randolph) captured first place in the 200 butterfly (2:33.13) and 400 freestyle (4:52.22).

Meghan McCourt (fr. Wenonah, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) set a new pool record in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:48.13. She was second in the 200 butterfly (2:36.33). Mackleer won the 100 freestyle in 1:10.82 and took second in the 100 backstroke in 1:13.08. Ashley Gagnon (fr. S. Amboy, NJ/Middlesex County Academy) captured first in the 200 freestyle (2:18.27) and second in the 200 IM (2:33.65). Carey Lafferty (sr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) came in first in the 800 freestyle in 9:55.01. She also finished second in the 400 free with a time of 4:52.48. DiRubbo and Milde had second places in the 100 freestyle (1:03.24) and 100 butterfly (1:14.32) respectively. Becky Goldberg (fr. Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) was second in the 200 backstroke in 2:38.09.

The men and women’s teams both improve to 2-0 on the season. Rowan hosts New York University on Saturday, November 4 at 1 p.m.
