GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University swimming and diving teams defeated visiting William Paterson in the season opener on Saturday. The Rowan men won 178-65 and the women had a 164-66 victory.
The Rowan men had a winning time of 1:42.80 in the 200 medley relay with the team of Jeremy Soto (fr. Tenafly, NJ/Tenafly), Kevin Baker (jr. Landing, NJ/Roxbury), David Shinton (jr. Newark, DE/Newark) and John Kosmo (fr. N. Brunswick, NJ/N. Brunswick Twp.). The 200 freestyle relay took first in 1:31.83. The free relay members were Dan Kelley (jr. Pittsgrove, NJ/A.P. Schalick), Andrew Williams (jr. Bensalem, PA/Father Judge), Andrew Donachy (fr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River N.) and Nick Giacopelli (sr. Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough).
Donachy had a first place in the 1,000 freestyle in 10:37.67 and Shane McGrath (sr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) followed second (10:49.30). Baker won the 200 individual medley (IM) in 2:04.86 while Soto was second (2:09.13) and Billy Swenson (so. Scotch Plains, NJ/St. Joseph) was third (2:13.23). Giacopelli posted a time of 50.38 in the 100 free for first place and Williams was second in 50.96. In the 100 backstroke, Chris Sykes (sr. Haworth, NJ/Northern Valley Reg.) won with a time of 58.33. Baker took first in the 100 breaststroke in 1:02.88 and Mark Anthony Spagnuolo (sr. West Orange, NJ/Bloomfield) was second (1:05.52).
Patrick Buck (so. Eastampton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) won the 500 freestyle in 5:13.26. Giacopelli had a second place in the 200 freestyle (1:49.11). In the 50 free, Sam Spracklin (fr. Westampton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) was second (22.92), Kevin Ovalle (jr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) third (23.07) and Kelley fourth (23.48). Stephen Tucker (fr. Pittsgrove, NJ/Sacred Heart) had a second place in the 100 butterfly (56.43) and Shinton took third (57.34).
In the one meter diving, Jeff Brinberg (sr. Ventnor, NJ/Atlantic City) finished first with 267 points, Bryan Carlisle (so. Somers Point, NJ/Mainland Reg.) was second (259.05) and David Bauer (so. Lanoka Harbor, NJ/Lacey Twp.) took fourth (201.83). Carlisle won the three meter diving with 293.10 points followed by Brinberg second (214.10) and Bauer third (188.33).
For William Paterson, Voyta Karas (fr. Morris Plains, NJ) won the 200 freestyle in 1:48.04 and the 100 butterfly (55.91). Joe Shirrman (fr. Pine Bush, NY/Pine Bush) had a first place in the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.72. He also took third in the 100 free (51.03). Stefan Rosales (so. Rahway, NJ/St. Joseph’s Metuchen) was second in the 100 backstroke (58.52) while David Caputo (so. Staten Island, NY/Curtis) took second in the 500 free (5:14.83).
The Rowan women took first place in the 200 medley relay (1:54.26) and the 200 freestyle relay (1:45.37). The medley relay consisted of Stephanie McAllister (fr. Mickleton, NJ/Kingsway Reg.), Meghan McCourt (fr. Wenonah, NJ/Gloucester Catholic), Janina Wojcik (so. Toms River, NJ/Toms River N.) and Alicia Mackleer (so. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest). Ashley Gagnon (fr. South Amboy, NJ/Middlesex County Academy), Christine DiRubbo (jr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee), Mackleer and Aileen Milde (jr. Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) made up the freestyle relay.
For the Profs, Caitlin Ayres (sr. Randolph, NJ/Randolph) won the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 11:24.96. Ayres took second in the 100 butterfly (1:04.50) and a third place in the 500 free (5:36.97). The Profs took first through third in the 200 freestyle - Gagnon first (2:03.18), Milde second (2:05.16) and Becky Goldberg (fr. Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) third (2:08.23). Gagnon won the 500 freestyle in 5:29.12 and Carey Lafferty (sr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) was second (5:34.06). Mackleer had a winning time of 25.42 in the 50 free, Wojcik came in second (25.86) and DiRubbo was third (26.10).
Samantha King (fr. Marmora, NJ/Ocean City) won the 200 IM (2:18.17) and McCourt took second (2:20.40). McCourt was first in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.83) while King was second (1:11.58). Wojcik swam a time of 1:03.17 to win the 100 butterfly. DiRubbo finished first in the 100 free (56.48) and Milde took second (57.00). McAllister won the 100 backstroke in 1:03.71. In the 1,000 freestyle, Lafferty took second place (11:25.76) followed by Laura Kuczynski (sr. Sayreville, NJ/Sayreville War Mem.) third (11:36.81).
For the Pioneers, Grace McKay (so. Fairlawn, NJ/Fairlawn) finished second in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:03.86. Jessica Lyon (jr. Pequannock, NJ/Pequannock) had a third place in the 200 IM (2:27.27) and the 100 breaststroke (1:13.36). In the 100 butterfly, Colleen Takemoto (sr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) finished third (1:06.48). Cathy Hartwell (so. Toms River, NJ/Toms River E.) took third in the 100 freestyle (57.28). In the women’s diving, William Paterson’s Jamie Hopper (jr. Kingston, NY/Kingston) had a first place in the one meter (154.43) while Giana Albruzzese (fr. Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany) won the three meter (142.65).
