NJCU Eliminates Rowan From NJAC Tournament

NEWARK, NJ – The New Jersey City University men’s soccer team had a 2-0 win over Rowan University in the first round of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championship Tournament. The game was played at New Jersey Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon.

Forward Jamel Carson (so. Jackson, NJ/Jackson Mem.) scored both of the Gothic Knights’ goals in the second half. Carson knocked in a rebounded shot after a save for the first goal at 55:19. Midfielder Jonathan Bilboa (so. Carteret, NJ/St. Benetict’s Prep) earned the assist. Six minutes later Carson headed in a free kick by midfielder John Jensen (jr. Monroe, NJ/Monroe Twp.) for the second goal.

NJCU outshot Rowan, 20-7 (11-2 in the second half). For the Profs, goalie Anthony Clemente (sr. Kendall Park, NJ/South Brunswick) stopped six shots. Bruce Neves (jr. Newark, NJ/Hudson Catholic) made one save for the Gothic Knights.

New Jersey City is 15-4-1 overall while Rowan has a 10-8-2 record. In the tournament, the Gothic Knights are the third seed and Rowan sixth.

In the semifinals, New Jersey City will play at number two Rutgers-Camden on Tuesday, October 31. The winner of the Kean-Richard Stockton first round game advances to the semifinal at number one Montclair State. The two semifinal winners meet in the championship on Friday, November 3 at the higher seed. The NJAC champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.
