Rowan Reaches NJAC Tournament With 2-1 Win Over TCNJ

EWING, NJ – The Rowan University men’s soccer team defeated The College of New Jersey, 2-1 in the last game of the regular season on Wednesday night. With the win, the Profs clinched sixth seed in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championship Tournament.

After a scoreless first half, back Andrew Bergman (sr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.) put Rowan on the scoreboard at 45:54. Bergman connected on midfielder Ryen Garrison’s (sr. Elmer, NJ./Cumberland Reg.) corner kick. Forward Sean Docherty (jr. Brick, NJ/Brick Mem.) put the Profs up 2-0 at 75:42 with an assist from forward Jay Vigilante (so. Manasquan, NJ/Wall).

Forward Matt Luber (sr. Delran, NJ/Delran) spoiled the shutout with an unassisted goal at 76:29. TCNJ totaled 16 shots while Rowan had seven. In the first period, the Lions outshot the Profs, 9-2. The Profs’ goalie Anthony Clemente (sr. Kendall Park, NJ/South Brunswick) stopped 10 shots. Goalie Matt Kasperavicius (jr. Jackson, NJ/Jackson Mem.) made two saves.

Rowan has an overall record of 10-7-2 and a 4-4-1 conference mark. TCNJ is 7-8-1 overall and 4-5 in the NJAC. The conference tournament pairings will be determined at the conclusion of the last two conference games this evening. Richard Stockton plays at Rutgers-Newark and Kean hosts William Paterson.

In the first round of the NJAC Championship Tournament, Rowan travels to the third seed New Jersey City University at 1 p.m. and fourth seeded Kean will host Richard Stockton at 8:30 p.m. The first and second place teams, Montclair State and Rutgers-Camden, respectively receive a first round bye. The semifinals are scheduled for Tuesday, October 31 and the final is on Friday, November 3. The NJAC champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.
