Rowan Celebrates Homecoming With A Win Over Kean, 16-12

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University football team scored two touchdowns in the third quarter to defeat New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) opponent Kean University, 16-12 in its Homecoming game.

With the win, the Profs improve to 5-1 overall and 4-0 in the conference. The Cougars have a 4-3 overall record and 2-2 NJAC mark. Rowan is ranked seventh in this week’s American Football Coaches Association Poll.

At halftime the score was tied at 3-3. Kean broke the tie at 6:34 in the third quarter, with a 25 yard field goal by kicker Jonathan Robinson (jr. Brick, NJ/Point Pleasant). Kean marched 73 yards on 12 plays, including 22 yards on three carries by running back Jared Chunn (fr. Eatontown, NJ/Monmouth Reg.). At 3:42, the Profs went ahead 10-6 on a four yard touchdown run by super back John Impagliazzo (so. Somers Point, NJ/Mainland Reg.). Quarterback Mike Orihel (sr. Trenton, NJ/Central Bucks W. (PA)) set up the touchdown with a 31 yard rush to the Kean five yard line.

Just over a minute and a half later, super back Davon Edwards (so. Del Haven, NJ/Middle Twp.) had a 10 yard touchdown run for a 16-6 advantage after a missed extra point. Linebacker Zach Garren (so. Gibbstown, NJ/Paulsboro) recovered a fumble by wide receiver Durell Dukes (so. Elizabeth, NJ/Elizabeth) to give Rowan the ball on the Kean 19 yard line. Edwards carried the ball twice, scoring on his second touch. Kean scored on a 34 yard touchdown from quarterback A.J. Roque (jr. Matawan, NJ/Matawan) to wide receiver James Felton (so. Plainfield, NJ/Plainfield) with 4:27 left in the game to make the score 16-12 after a missed PAT.

The Profs were led by Edwards with 74 yards rushing and one touchdown on 16 carries. Orihel completed 13 of 22 passes for 88 yards. He also rushed for 37 yards on six carries. Wide receiver Dustin Katcher (jr. Milltown, NJ/Spotswood) caught six passes for 42 yards.

Rowan’s defense held Kean to 192 yards of total offense, zero rushing and 192 passing. Linebacker Chris Pinto (so. Barnegat, NJ/Southern Reg.) recorded a game-high 10 tackles and one sack (-9 yards). Defensive back Kelvin Bellamy (jr. Trenton,NJ/Nottingham) and Garren each made six stops. Defensive ends Keith Heimerl (sr. Sewell, NJ/Clearview Reg.) and Randy Tosh (jr. Columbia, NJ/North Warren Reg.) had one sack apiece.

For Kean, Roque threw for 192 yards and one touchdown on 19 of 33 pass attempts. Felton and Dukes totaled 71 and 64 yards receiving, respectively. Chunn rushed for 28 yards on six carries.

Linebacker Jason Leeds (fr. Egg Harbor City, NJ/Absegami) posted eight tackles, while safety Ryan Staton (jr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) and linebacker Jake Pew (so. Sussex, NJ/Vernon) made seven stops apiece. Defensive lineman John Parker (fr. Egg Harbor City, NJ/Absegami) forced one fumble and defensive backs Guy Ulmer-Santos (so. Jersey City, NJ/Lincoln) and Aharon Kiett (sr. Atlantic City, NJ/Oakcrest) each had one interception.

Rowan kicker Daniel Roberts (jr. Hamilton, NJ/Hamilton W.) connected on a 27 yard field as time expired in the first quarter to give Rowan a 3-0 lead. The Profs started on the Cougars’ 25 yard line and Orihel hit Katcher with a seven yard pass to set up the kick. Kean tied the game with a 27 yard field goal by Robinson with 1:25 remaining in the half. Kiett intercepted a pass by Orihel, giving the Cougars the ball on the Profs’ 41 yard line. Roque completed three passes for 25 yards in the drive.

Rowan travels to Montclair State for a NJAC game on Saturday, October 28 at 1 p.m., while Kean hosts William Paterson at 1 p.m.
