Kean Hands Rowan First Loss, 1-0

UNION, NJ – The Kean University women’s soccer team defeated visiting Rowan University, 2-1 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Saturday night.

It was the first loss of the season for the Profs. Rowan has an overall record of 13-1-2 and a 5-1-2 conference mark. Kean is 10-3-2 overall and 4-3-1 in the NJAC.

The Cougars got on the scoreboard at 42:15 with an unassisted goal by forward Amanda Pitts (so. Rahway, NJ/Union Catholic). Pitts knocked in her own deflection after a shot. At 67:16, Kean went up 2-0 when midfielder Brienne Campbell (sr. Freehold, NJ/Freehold Boro) scored on a direct kick.

Midfielder Krista Verzi (fr. Delran, NJ/Delran) had Rowan’s lone goal at 87:12. Verzi kicked in a rebound and midfielder Kaitlyn Florio (so. Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City) earned an assist.

Kean took 19 shots while Rowan had 16. In the Cougars’ net, goalie Nicole Groszew (fr. Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls) made eight saves. For the Profs, goalie Gabby Ditchey (sr. Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape Reg.) stopped 13 shots.

Rowan ends the regular season at The College of New Jersey on Wednesday, October 25 at 7:30 p.m. The top six teams in the conference advance to the NJAC Championship Tournament that starts on Saturday, October 28.
