Profs Storm Past Scarlet Raiders, 7-0

NEWARK, NJ – Forward Robert McMullen scored three goals in the Rowan University men’s soccer team’s 7-0 win over host Rutgers-Newark in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Saturday night.

Rowan improves to 8-6-2 overall and 2-4-1 in the conference. Rutgers-Newark has a 5-9-1 record and a 0-7 NJAC mark.

McMullen (sr. Barrington, NJ/Northern Burlington) had the Profs’ first goal at 6:42 off of a cross from forward Anthony Porta (fr. Jersey City, NJ/Hudson Catholic). At 23:47, McMullen had an unassisted goal. Back James Cox (fr. Hazlet, NJ/Raritan) knocked in the first his two goals at 38:54. Midfielders Peter Malkmus (jr. Brick, NJ/Brick Mem.) and Ryen Garrison (sr. Elmer, NJ/Cumberland Reg.) each picked up an assist. At 43:12, back Dave Smith (sr. Jackson, NJ/Jackson Mem.) converted on a penalty kick to give Rowan a 4-0 halftime advantage.

In the second half, McMullen scored his third goal at 57:23 on a cross from Cox. Forward Jay Vigilante (so. Manasquan, NJ/Wall) found the net at 67:17 for a 6-0 lead. Cox had Rowan’s final goal at 69:46 and midfielder Michael Pascale (fr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River S.) got the assist.

Rowan outshot Rutgers-Newark 18-16. Goalie Anthony Clemente (sr. Kendall Park, NJ/South Brunswick) started the game for Rowan and made six saves in 61 minutes. Goalie Brian Lloyd (sr. Swainton, NJ/Middle Twp.) had two stops in the final 29 minutes. For Rutgers-Newark, goalie Matt Johnson had six saves.

Rowan hosts nonconference opponent New York University on Wednesday, October 18 at 7:30 p.m.
