PHOENIXVILLE, PA– The Rowan University men’s basketball team defeated Valley Forge Christian College, 86-82 on Tuesday night.
The Profs improve to 11-12 overall while the Patriots have an 18-7 record. Rowan had five players that scored in double figures. Guard Kendall White (jr. Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) totaled 20 points and seven rebounds. Guard Rich McNamara (so. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) contributed 16 points and five boards. Guard Jason Rosenberg (so. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) and forward Matt Whitworth (so. Ocean City, NJ/Ocean City) each chipped in with 12 points. Rosenberg also collected eight assists and five steals. Guard Phil Jackson (so. Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) added 11 points.
For Valley Forge Christian, guard/forward Latrell Alford registered game-highs of 25 points and 11 rebounds. Forward Michael Stum scored 18 points and grabbed seven boards. Guards Donnell Davis and Kevin Mack tallied 10 points apiece. Davis also had six rebounds and four assists. Forward Justin Kinsey added nine points, five rebounds and four assists.
The Patriots started the second half with a four-point advantage (44-40). Rosenberg’s foul shot at 18:17 pulled the Profs within three points (46-43). VFCC then scored eight straight points to lead 54-43 at 16:44. Mack contributed with four points while Kinsey and Stum each had two. At 15:14, the Patriots were ahead 56-50. Rowan pulled within one (56-55) with three free throws by Rosenberg (14:26) and a layup from center Dee Benson (so. Somerdale, NJ/Sterling). Alford’s three-point play made the score 61-55 at 12:28.
The Profs would pull within one point five more times before tying the score. McNamara drained a three (6:38) that tied the score at 73. Whitworth followed with a three-pointer (6:03) to take the lead 76-73. Rowan never trailed again for the remainder of the game. Davis had a free throw (4:30) and the Patriots were down by two (78-76). After five straight points, the Profs were up by seven (83-76) with 3:25 on the clock. White and McNamara each had two points and Rosenberg made one. Alford sank two foul shots (1:24) and a jumper (0:53) to cut the deficit to two (84-82). White sealed the victory with two free throws at the three second mark. He compiled 14 points in the last period and McNamara posted 12.
There were seven ties in the first half. Kinsey converted two foul shots at 12:40 that tied the game at 17. Whitworth nailed back-to-back threes for a six-point lead (23-17) at 11:54. Jackson’s three-pointer made the score 30-23 at 6:07. With 3:44 left, Rowan was up 36-29. Valley Forge Christian had a 7-0 run that tied the game for the sixth time (36-36). McNamara followed with a basket (2:04) while Kinsey hit a three (1:50) to take the lead (39-38). Benson’s tip-in put the Profs on top 40-39. Stum’s free throw knotted the score at 40 (0:54). Kinsey (0:23) and Mack (0:00) each followed with a basket to lead at the break 44-40. Stum and Alford compiled 10 points apiece in the first period.
Rowan travels to Richard Stockton College on Saturday, February 11 for a 3 p.m. conference game.
