Berkeley Tops Penn State Brandywine, 71-65 in Heritage's Dairy Stores Classic Consolation

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Berkeley College men’s basketball team defeated Penn State Brandywine, 71-65 in the consolation game of the Heritage’s Dairy Stores Classic on Saturday. The tournament was hosted by Rowan University.

In the first round on Friday, Delaware Valley College won 79-44 over Penn State Brandywine while Rowan beat Berkeley College, 82-60. Delaware Valley and Rowan advanced to the championship game.

For Berkeley (3-7), guard Jarrel Young scored a game-high 23 points. Young also had five rebounds, seven assists and three steals. Forward Donovan Black totaled 15 points and 14 rebounds. Forward Sherone Nelson pulled down a game-high 16 boards and added 10 points.

Penn State Brandywine (0-9) was led by guard Kyle Hagerty with 20 points and seven rebounds. Guard TJ Hazinsky chipped in with nine points. Forward Zikos Economides had seven points and five boards.

Berkeley started the second period trailing by two points (25-23). The score was tied five times before the Bulldogs took the lead for good. The last one was at 46 (8:39) after forward Learon Pray made two foul shots for Penn State Brandywine. Berkeley answered with eight straight points to lead 54-46 at 6:17. Guard Jamal Salaam and Young each scored three points and forward Devin Bennett had a basket. Hagerty’s three at 2:55 pulled the Nittany Lions within four points (59-54). It was the closest Penn State Brandywine came for the remainder of the game. Young sealed the victory with two free throws at 00:34 for a 10 point lead (67-57). Black compiled 13 second half points for the Bulldogs while Hagerty totaled 18 for the Nittany Lions.

In the first half, Penn State Brandywine was up by four points (8-4) at 17:12 after Economides had a layup. Young hit a three-pointer that gave the Bulldogs the lead (14-11) with 13:55 remaining. Economides answered with a layup (13:15) and guard Darryl White made a three (12:41) to retake the lead 16-14. White added another three-pointer at 10:56 for a five point advantage (19-14). Penn State Brandywine was ahead 24-18 with 6:57 remaining. Berkeley scored five straight points and trailed by one point (24-23) with 2:18 on the clock. Black and Nelson each contributed with a basket and forward Tyrone Davis added one foul shot. With 57 seconds left, Pray made a free throw that made the score 25-23 at the break.
