A catcher, he lettered in baseball for four years and was captain three times. He also played basketball two seasons. His junior and senior years, Toscano was selected to the All-Conference teams. In 1966, he received NAIA All-American honorable mention and Albert F. White Award.
               
Toscano also played basketball for two seasons and was an athletic trainer for football. He was president of the Men’s Athletic Association his senior year and president of the Bureau of Athletics. Toscano was named to the Education Honor Society and Who’s Who in American Colleges.
               
He received his bachelor’s in 1966 and his master’s in pupil personnel services in 1970 and education administration in 1973. He attended Clifford Scott High School in East Orange.
