Game Four - #7 Hunter College 6, #4 Kean University 4 (Kean is eliminated.)

Hunter College defeated Kean University, 6-4 in the second day of competition at the NCAA Division III Softball Championship Tournament. 

 

The seventh seeded Hawks (23-20) play Western Connecticut State in game eight at 2:30 p.m. today.  The Cougars, the fourth seed, end the season with a 30-16 record.  In the opening game (May 8), Western Connecticut State shut out Kean, 2-0.

 

Right hander Allyshia West (sr. Owen Sound, ON/West Hills Secondary) pitched a complete game for the victory.  West (14-12) recorded seven strikeouts.  Pitcher Kristen Hennings (sr. Jackson, NJ/Jackson Mem.) suffered the loss.  Hennings (7-7) went five innings and gave up five runs, three earned.    

 

Right fielder Jennifer Damroth (jr. West Babylon, NY/West Babylon) led Hunter with two hits (four at bats), three RBIs and one run scored.  Center fielder Stephanie Alves (so. Queens, NY/Francis Lewis) went four for four with one run scored.  Designated player Victoria Capece (fr. Floral Park, NY/Mary Louis Academy) had one hit (three at bats) and two RBIs.   

For Kean, second baseman Sara Steinman (jr. Springfield, NJ/Jonathan Dayton) and right fielder Nikki Castagno (so. Carteret, NJ/Carteret) each contributed with two hits and one RBI.  Left fielder Jesse Buchanan (jr. Washington Twp., NJ/Washington Twp.) went two for four. 

 

The score was tied at two after three innings.  The Cougars went up 3-2 with one run in the top of the fourth.  Castagno singled and later scored on an error.  Hunter took the lead with three runs in the fifth.  Damroth drove in one run with a single and Capece had a two RBI single up the middle.  The Hawks added to their lead with one run in the sixth.  Second baseman Catherine Alves (jr. Queens, NY/Francis Lewis) came home on an error.  In the seventh, Steinman led off with a double for Kean.  She scored on Castagno’s hit down the left field line.        

 

Game Six - #5 Western Connecticut State University 7, #3 Rowan University 0 (Rowan is eliminated.)

The fifth seed Western Connecticut State University blanked number three Rowan University, 7-0 in the first round of the NCAA Division III Softball Championship Tournament on Saturday.  It was the second day of competition at Rowan as rain delayed Friday’s schedule.   

 

Western Connecticut State (30-14) meets the seventh seed Hunter College (23-20) at 2:30 p.m. today.  Rowan University finishes the year with a 31-11 record.

 

Right hander Shelby Slie (sr. Seymour, CT/Seymour) went the distance on the mound for the win.  Slie (17-7) scattered six hits and struck eight batters for her seventh shutout on the season.  Pitcher Jackie Sasko (jr. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) took the loss.  Sasko ends the season with a 19-7 mark. 

 

For the Colonels, second baseman Kristen Lugovich (sr. West Haven, CT/West Haven) went two for four with three RBIs and one run scored.  Center fielder Rebecca Andruskiwec (so. Orange, CT/Amity) and left fielder Megan Brunell (sr. North Attleboro, MA/North Attleboro) each contributed with two hits (three at bats) and two runs scored.  Third baseman Stacey DiMaggio (sr. Hopewell Jct., NY/John Jay) added a double and one RBI.

 

Right fielder Heidi Smith (so. Hainesport, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) and catcher Stephanie Taraschi (so. Mt. Ephraim, NJ/Audubon) both had two hits (three at bats) for Rowan.  Smith recorded her 17th double this year.    

 

Western Connecticut State jumped out to a 4-0 lead with two runs in the first and second innings.  First baseman Cortney Romyns (sr. Newton, NJ/Blair Academy) scored on an error and DiMaggio’s double brought home Lugovich in the first inning.  In the second, Lugovich had a bunt single that plated Andruskiwec.  Brunell scored when Lugovich was caught stealing going to second base.

 

The Colonels sealed the victory with three runs in the bottom of the sixth.  Right fielder Amy Hartman (fr. Ellington, CT/Ellington) crossed the plate on an error for the first run.  Lugovich singled to center field, scoring Brunell and Andruskiwec.

Game Seven - #6 Denison University 5, #2 Mount Union College 0

The sixth seed Denison University shut out number two Mount Union College, 5-0 in the NCAA Division III Softball Championship Tournament First Round.

Denison (27-10) faces the top seed Muskingum College (37-9) at 5 p.m. today.  Mount Union (37-9) plays the winner of game eight, Western Connecticut State and Hunter College on Sunday at 9 a.m.

 

Bri Scrofano (sr. Longs, SC/McDowell) was the winning pitcher.  Scrofano (17-4) only gave up four hits in her fifth shutout of the year.  Pitcher Lindsey Royer (sr. Louisville, OH/Marlington) took the loss. 

 

Catcher Brie Berkopec (so. Mars, PA/Mars Senior) went two for three with a double and one RBI for the Big Red.  First baseman Erica Evans (fr. Worthington, OH/Thomas Worthington) contributed with a two run homer.  Second baseman Claire Kopko (sr. Washington, PA/Trinity) and right fielder Rachel Cotterman (sr. New Lexington, OH/Fisher Catholic) each had one hit and one RBI.

 

For Mount Union, Royer went two for three.  Shortstop Meghan Simons (so. East Rochester, OH/Minerva) and catcher Mara Palombaro (fr. Boardman, OH/Cardinal Mooney) each had one hit in three at bats.

Denison had a 2-0 lead in the second inning.  Berkopec had a lead-off double and she scored on a double by Kopko.  Cotterman’s single plated Kopko.  The Big Red went up 4-0 after two runs in the fourth.  Third baseman Alex Murray (so. Mayfield Heights, OH/Notre Dame-Cathedral) led off with a double and she came home on Evan’s home run.  It was the second homer for Evans this year.  In the fifth, Berkopec doubled in shortstop Ali Silver (sr. Baltimore, MD/Kenwood) for Denison’s final run of the game.

Game Eight - #5 Western Connecticut State University 4, #7 Hunter College 0 (Hunter is eliminated.)

Western Connecticut State shut out Hunter College, 4-0 in the NCAA Division III Softball Championship Tournament First Round.   It was the second day of competition at Rowan after rain postponed Friday’s games.

 

The fifth seed Western Connecticut State (31-14) faces the second seed Mount Union College (37-9) on Sunday at 9 a.m.  Hunter College, the seventh seed, completes the season with a 23-21 record. 

 

Right hander Cortney Romyns (sr. Newton, NJ/Blair Academy) pitched a complete game for her third shutout.  Romyns (7-3) only gave up four hits.  Allyshia West (sr. Owen Sound, ON/West Hills Secondary) suffered the loss on the mound.  West (14-13) struck out 11 batters.    

 

For the Colonels, right fielder Amy Hartman (fr. Ellington, CT/Ellington) contributed with a double and two RBIs.  Third baseman Stacey DiMaggio (sr. Hopewell Jct., NY/John Jay) had a double and one RBI.  Catcher Brittany Finkeldey (sr. Ivoryton, CT/Ellington) added one RBI and second baseman Kristen Lugovich (sr. West Haven, CT/West Haven) scored two runs. 

 

Hunter shortstop Megan McKenna (fr. Rockaway, NY/Midwood) went two for three.  Center fielder Jennifer Damroth (jr. West Babylon, NY/West Babylon) and left fielder Priscilla Gonzalez-Alicea (sr. Brooklyn, NY/Edward R. Murrow) each had one hit.

 

DiMaggio had a RBI double that scored Lugovich for Western Connecticut’s first run in the bottom of the first inning.  The Colonels went up 4-0 after three runs in the third.  Lugovich went home on a fielder’s choice with Finkeldey at the plate.  Hartman’s double plated shortstop Loren Angiolillo (jr. Wolcott, CT/Wolcott) and Finkeldey.  Angiolillo reached base with a double.

Game Nine - #6 Denison University 3, #1 Muskingum College 2

The sixth seed Denison University upset the top seed Muskingum College, 3-2 in the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament First Round.  The first round at Rowan University was postponed on Friday due to rain. 

 

Denison (28-10) plays the winner of game 11 on Sunday at 1 p.m..  In game 10, number five Western Connecticut State (31-14) meets number two Mount Union College (37-9) at 9 a.m.  In game 11, Muskingum (37-10) faces the winner of game 10 at 11 a.m.  The first round is double elimination.

 

After trailing 2-0 in the top of the fifth inning, the Big Red came back with three runs in the bottom half to take the lead.  First baseman Erica Evans (fr. Worthington, OH/Thomas Worthington) scored the first run on a fielder’s choice with center fielder Mary Beth Krolikowski (jr. Brunswick, OH/Holy Name) at the plate.  Shortstop Ali Silver (sr. Baltimore, MD/Kenwood) drove in left fielder Ali Teopas (sr. Sylvania, OH/Northview) with a single for the tying run.  Krolikowski scored on designated player Sam Rumschlag’s (so. Carmel, IN/Cathedral) hit through the left side. 

 

Silver ended the game with two hits (three at bats) and one RBI.  Rumschlag had one hit and one RBI.  Teopas went one for three and scored one run.  Bri Scrofano (sr. Longs, SC/McDowell) was the winning pitcher in relief.  Scrofano (18-4) went 2.1 scoreless innings and did not give up a hit. 

 

For Muskingum, center fielder Jessica Bosway (jr. Chagrin Falls, OH/Kenston) went two for three with one run scored.  Designated player Randi Dance (jr. Olmsted Falls, OH) contributed with one hit (three at bats) and one RBI.  Shortstop Jamie Echelberger (sr. Ashland, OH/Hillside) added one hit (four at bats) and scored one run.  Amy Mattin (sr. Delta, OH) suffered the loss on the mound.

In the top of the fifth, Dance drove in Bosway with a single and Echelberger came home on an error.  Bosway reached base with a single to left field and Echelberger got on with a single.
