In the opening game, Western Connecticut State University shut out Kean University,
2-0 at the first round of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.
The fifth seed Western Connecticut State (29-13) plays number one Muskingum College
(36-9) at 4 p.m. today. Kean (30-15),
seeded fourth, meets the seventh seed Hunter College
(22-20) at 10 a.m. on Friday.
Right hander Shelby Slie (sr. Seymour, CT/Seymour) pitched a complete game for the
victory. Slie (16-6) only allowed three
hits for her sixth shutout of the season.
Pitcher Courtney Smyth (fr. Abington, PA/Abington) suffered the loss.
Smyth (14-6) went seven innings and gave up five hits and two runs, one earned.
For the Colonels, right fielder Amy Hartman (fr. Ellington, CT/Ellington) went one
for three with a double and one RBI.
Left fielder Megan Brunell (sr. North Attleboro, MA/North Attleboro) contributed
with one hit (three at bats) and one RBI.
Catcher Brittany Finkeldey (sr. Ivoryton, CT/The Williams School) and first baseman
Katelyn Farrell (so. Stratford, CT/Bunnell) each scored one run.
Shortstop Johanna Hedler (sr. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield), first baseman
Katie Hicks (sr. Medford Lakes, NJ/Holy Cross) and third baseman Kara Schultz (sr.
Clinton, NJ/North Hunterdon) each had a hit for the Cougars.
Hedler recorded a double.
Western Connecticut scored its first run in the top of the second inning.
With two outs, Farrell singled to left field and advanced to second on a
wild pitch. Brunell’s single up the
middle brought home Farrell. The Colonels
went up 2-0 in the fourth inning. Hartman
doubled in Finkeldey who reached base on an error.
Game Two - #6 Denison University 10, #3 Rowan
University 1 (6 innings)

The Denison University softball team won 10-1 in six innings over Rowan University
in the first round of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.
The double elimination first round is being held at Rowan, May 8-11.
The sixth seed Denison (26-10) plays the second seed Mount Union College (37-8)
on Friday at 2 p.m. Rowan (31-10),
seeded third, meets the fifth seed Western Connecticut State (29-14) at noon.
Pitcher Bri Scrofano (sr. Longs, SC/McDowell) went six innings for the victory. Scrofano (16-4) scattered six hits and
gave up one unearned run. Right hander
Jackie Sasko (jr. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) suffered the loss.
Sasko (19-6) pitched 5.1 innings and allowed seven runs, four were earned.
For the Big Red, designated player Sam Rumschlag (so. Carmel, IN/Cathedral) went
three for three with two RBIs and one run scored.
Third baseman Alex Murray (so. Mayfield Heights, OH/Notre Dame-Cathedral),
second baseman Claire Kopko (sr. Washington, PA/Trinity) and right fielder Rachel
Cotterman (sr. New Lexington, OH/Fisher Catholic) all contributed with two hits
(four at bats), two RBIs and one run scored.
Catcher Brie Berkopec (so. Mars, PA/Mars Senior) added two hits in three at bats,
a double, one RBI and one run scored.
Left fielder Ali Teopas (sr. Sylvania, OH/Northview) and center fielder Mary Beth
Krolikowski (jr. Brunswick, OH/Holy Name) each scored two runs while first baseman
Erica Evans (fr. Worthington, OH/Thomas Worthington) had one RBI.
First baseman Jenna DiDonato (so. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) went two for three with
a double for the Profs. Third baseman
Kristin Wallace (sr. Glassboro, NJ/Washington Twp.) had one hit (three at bats)
and scored one run. Rowan’s lone run
came in the bottom of the third inning.
With two outs, Wallace and Sasko hit back-to-back singles.
Catcher Stephanie Taraschi (so. Mt. Ephraim, NJ/Audubon) reached base on
an error, scoring Wallace.
Denison took the lead with four runs in the fifth.
Berkopec walked with the bases loaded and Cotterman scored to tie the game. Teopas crossed the plate on a single
by Rumschlag. Murray and Kopko both
plated a run with a single.
The Big Red racked up six runs in the sixth to end the game an inning earlier because
of the eight run rule. Rumschlag, Murray
and Kopko all recorded a RBI single.
Cotterman drove in two runs with a single and Evans’ single scored the 10th
run.
Game Three - #2 Mount Union College 6, #7 Hunter
College 0

Mount Union College blanked Hunter College, 6-0 in the first round of the NCAA
Division III Championship Tournament.
The Purple Raiders (37-8) are the second seed while the Hawks (22-20) are seeded
seventh.
On Friday, Hunter plays the
fourth seed Kean University (30-15) at 10 a.m. while Mount Union meets the sixth
seed Denison University (26-10) at 2 p.m.
Pitcher Lindsey Royer (sr. Louisville, OH/Marlington) went the distance on the mound
for the win. Royer (27-4) only allowed
two hits and she struck out seven batters.
It was her sixth shutout of the season.
Right hander Allyshia West (sr. Owen Sound, ON/West Hills Secondary) took the loss.
The Purple Raiders were led by left fielder Erin Duignan (sr. Green, OH) with three
hits in three at bats, one double, one RBI and two runs scored.
Center fielder Meghan Allen (so. Hartville, OH/Lake) and second baseman Alex
Lucak (fr. Maple Heights, OH/Trinity) each contributed with a double and two RBIs. Catcher Mara Palombaro (fr. Boardman,
OH/Cardinal Mooney) added a double and scored one run.
For the Hawks, second baseman Catherine Alves (jr. Queens, NY/Francis Lewis) hit
a double and right fielder Jennifer Damroth (jr. West Babylon, NY/West Babylon)
had a single.
Mount Union got on the scoreboard with one run in the bottom of the second inning. Duignan doubled to right center field,
scoring Royer who reached base on an error.
The Purple Raiders went up 4-0 with three runs in the fourth.
Lucak drove in two runs with a double and she came home on an error. In the sixth, Mount Union added two
insurance runs with Allen’s two RBI double to left field.
Game Four - #1 Muskingum 3, #5 Western Connecticut

Right fielder Kelli Mann doubled in the winning run for Muskingum College in a 3-2
win over Western Connecticut State University in the first round of the NCAA Division
III Softball Championship Tournament.
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Mann’s (sr. Canton, OH/Perry) shot to
center field scored third baseman Heather Fields (sr. Bradford, OH/Covington). Mann ended the game with two hits (four
at bats), one RBI and one run scored.
Fields went two for three with one run scored.
Shortstop Jamie Echelberger (sr. Ashland, OH/Hillside) scored one run and
catcher Kari Hoying (sr. Russia/Russia Local) had one RBI.
The top seed Muskingum (37-9) has a bye on Friday.
The Muskies’ next game is on Saturday at 10 a.m. against the winner of game
seven, Denison and Mount Union. Western
Connecticut State (29-14), the fifth seed, plays host Rowan, the third seed at noon
on Friday.
Righty Amy Mattin (jr. Delta, OH) pitched a complete game for the victory.
Mattin (27-5) allowed four hits and struck out six hitters.

Muskingum took the lead 2-0
in the bottom of the third. Mann came
home for the first run when Echelberger had a sac bunt and got on base because of
an error. Hoying’s sacrifice fly later
scored Echelberger. Western Connecticut
cut the deficit to one on Romyns homer in the fifth.
It was her fifth home run on the season.
DiMaggio crossed the plate for the tying run in the sixth on a fielder’s
choice with Brunell at the plate.
