Box Score 2 UNION, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team won 8-7 in 15 innings over William Paterson University in a game that was resumed on Saturday at Kean University.
The Profs and Pioneers were tied at seven after 12 innings in Glassboro on May 5 in the second round contest of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championship. Rowan (24-17) is the fourth seed in the tournament and William Paterson (21-19) is sixth.
Rowan plays the second seed The College of New Jersey (29-9) at 3 p.m. Prior, William Paterson meets the fifth seed Montclair State University (21-19) at 11:30 a.m.
Third baseman
Dillon Mendel (fr. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) led off the bottom of the 15th inning with a single up the middle. Second baseman
Evan Hughes (sr. Wilmington, DE/Alexis I. duPont) moved Mendel to second with a sac bunt. First baseman
Steven Todd (sr. Millstone Twp., NJ/Allentown) doubled to right field and Mendel advanced to third. Catcher
Greg Myers (sr. Westmont, NJ/Haddon Twp.) walked. Right fielder
Kyle Golla (jr. Palm Coast, FL/Allentown (NJ)) knocked in Mendel with a single to the left side.
Right-hander
Rob Grilli (jr. Middletown, NJ/Middletown S.) was the winning pitcher. In three innings, he (3-2) only allowed one hit. Righty Mitch D'Amato (sr. Edison, NJ/Edison) had the loss.
Center fielder
Bret Phillips (sr. Audubon, NJ/Audubon) ended the game with five hits, a double, one RBI and two runs. Todd contributed with three hits, one double, one triple and two RBIs. Golla registered four hits, two doubles, one RBI and one run. Hughes added two hits, one RBI and one run.
For William Paterson, right fielder Anthony Hoagland (so. Dumont, NJ/Dumont) collected two hits, one RBI and one run. Second baseman Rob Eggert (so. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) tallied two hits. Center fielder Jordan Aughey (sr. Wanaque, NJ/Lakeland Reg.) scored two runs and left fielder Jimmy Kenny (sr. Fairfield, NJ/West Essex Reg.) had two RBIs.
On Thursday, the Profs scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, which knotted the game at seven. Phillips led off with a double down the right field line. Left fielder
Eric Oliver (sr. Voorhees, NJ/Eastern Reg.) walked and shortstop
Matt Jolly (jr. Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) followed with a base hit to left field. Mendel singled and Phillips scored. Todd plated Oliver and Jolly with a hit to center field.
The Pioneers led 3-0 after two innings. In the second, designated hitter Eriq Colon (jr. Hackensack, NJ/Hackensack) registered a two run homer to left field. Kenny blasted a two run shot in the top of the third inning for a 5-0 advantage. In the bottom half, Rowan produced three runs and trailed 5-3. Phillips doubled in Golla, who got on base with a double. Oliver followed with a double, scoring Phillips. Designated hitter
Monny Strickland (so. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) had a base hit and Oliver crossed the plate.
Both teams scored one run in the fourth inning. Aughey tallied a RBI double and Hughes had a solo home run. The Pioneers were ahead 7-4 after a RBI single by Hoagland in the seventh.
