Ramapo Baseball Wins 5-2 Over Rowan In NJAC First Round

Box Score MAHWAH, NJ  – The Ramapo College baseball team won 5-2 over Rowan University on Tuesday in the first round of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championship Tournament.
 
The Profs (23-17), the fourth seed, will host the sixth seed William Paterson University (21-18) on Thursday, May 5 at 3:30 p.m. in the second round.  The Pioneers upset the top seed Kean University, 5-3 in the opening round.  Montclair State University, seeded fifth, travels to the second seed The College of New Jersey on Wednesday, May 4 for the final first round game. 
 
The remainder of the double elimination tournament will be held at Kean University on Saturday and Sunday, May 7 and 8.  The conference champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.  Tickets for the conference postseason are $5 for adults and $2 for students, children and senior citizens. 
 
Greg Westhelle (fr. Norwood, NJ/Northern Valley-Old Tappan) was the winning pitcher in relief.  He (5-1) went 3.1 innings and only allowed three hits.  Right-hander Eric Shugars (fr. Shamong, NJ/Seneca) took the loss.
 
Designated hitter Scott Paulus (sr. Washington, NJ/Warren Hills) led the Roadrunners with three hits in four at bats, two doubles, three RBIs and two runs.  Right fielder Rob DeAngelis (jr. Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell) and second baseman Joe Venturino (sr. Barnegat Light, NJ/Monsignor Farrell) each contributed with two hits.  Catcher Ryan Rinsky (sr. North Caldwell, NJ/West Essex) and Venturino each knocked in one run.  Third baseman Austin Unglaub (so. Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne), first baseman Connor Walsh (so. Waldwick, NJ/Waldwick) and center fielder Brandon Martinez (jr. River Edge, NJ/River Dell) all scored one run.
 
For Rowan, designated hitter Monny Strickland (so. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) and right fielder Kyle Golla (jr. Palm Coast, NJ/Allentown (NJ)) each collected two hits.  Left fielder Eric Oliver (sr. Voorhees, NJ/Eastern Reg.) and second baseman Evan Hughes (sr. Wilmington, DE/Alexis I. duPont) each had one RBI.
 
Both teams scored two runs in the second inning.  Third baseman Dillon Mendel (fr. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) led off with a triple and came home on a sacrifice fly by Hughes.  Oliver singled to right field, scoring first baseman Steven Todd (sr. Millstone Twp., NJ/Allentown).  In the bottom half, Paulus drove in one run with a double and Rinksy recorded a sac fly.

The Roadrunners took the lead with one run in the fourth.  Venturino had a base hit and Paulus scored.  In the fifth inning, Paulus produced a two RBI double.
