Complete list of 2010-11 All-Americans
GLASSBORO, NJ – Rowan University honored its All-Americans, Academic All-Americans and special award winners at an end of the year banquet on Sunday, May 1 at Masso’s Red Pine Inn.
The special award winners were baseball pitcher Curtis Arsi, the Richard Wackar Athletic Award; women’s basketball guard Gina Catanzariti, the Dr. Shirley O’Day Athletic Award; football defensive end Matt Hoffman, the Dr. Michael Briglia Scholar-Athlete Award; women’s soccer forward Jess Babice, the Dr. Mary A. Rice Scholar-Athlete Award; women’s lacrosse attack Leah Hershey and men’s swimmer Bill Malone, the Rowan Prof Award and acting Dean of the College of Engineering Steven Chin and general manager of Rowan Radio 89.7 WGLS-FM Frank Hogan, the Distinguished Service Awards. Men’s cross country and track runner Ryan Hoxworth and softball pitcher Erika Knorr both received the Athletic Director’s Scholar-Athlete Award.
The Wackar Award is given to a junior or senior male athlete who has participated in two years of varsity sports and has demonstrated outstanding athletic achievement, leadership and attitude. Arsi (jr. Washington Twp., NJ/Westwood Reg.) has been a member of the baseball team for two seasons. He has appeared in 25 games with seven starts and two complete games. Arsi has a 5-4 career record with one save and a 2.91 earned run average (ERA). In 74.1 innings, he has 78 strikeouts. This year, Arsi is 5-3 with a 2.04 ERA and a conference best 63 strikeouts. A Rowan Scholar-Athlete, he has a 3.347 grade point average (GPA) in health and exercise science.
The Dr. Shirley O’Day Award is given to a senior female athlete who has participated in three years of varsity sports and has demonstrated leadership, cooperation, good attitude and a fine academic standing. A captain, Catanzariti (sr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) ranks 13th all-time at the University with 1,017 points. In 97 career contests, she averaged 10.5 points, 4.9 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.7 steals per game. Catanzariti posted 11.6 points and 5.1 rebounds per game in her senior year. She is a member of the University’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). Catanzariti is a Rowan Scholar-Athlete majoring in business marketing with a 3.60 GPA.
The Briglia Award is presented to a senior male athlete who has participated in two years of varsity sports, has a GPA of at least 3.0 and possesses skill, attitude and dedication to athletics. A team captain, Hoffman (sr. Burlington, NJ/Burlington Twp.) led the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) in sacks (0.85), tackles for a loss (2.15) and was tied for first in forced fumbles (0.3). He was fourth in Division III in tackles for a loss and 30th in sacks.
Hoffman was first on the team with 65 tackles (30 solo, 35 assisted), 21.5 tackles for a loss (-106 yards) and 8.5 sacks (-75 yards). In 32 career games, he totaled 156 tackles (75 solo, 81 assisted), 49.0 tackles for a loss (-225 yards), 22.0 sacks (-166 yards), five forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and two blocked kicks.
This season, Hoffman was a finalist for the Gagliardi Trophy, given to the top player in Division III. He was named the NJAC and D3football.com East Region Defensive Player of the Year. Hoffman collected Associated Press Little All-America first team and D3football.com All-America second team honors. He was selected to the NJAC All-Conference and D3football.com East All-Region first teams and the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) South All-Star Team. Hoffman received the Most Courageous Athlete Award and Special Achievement Award at the New Jersey and Philadelphia Sports Writers Association Banquets respectively. A Rowan-Scholar Athlete, he earned Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Team honors. As part of the football team’s Get In The Game. Save A Life. Bone Marrow Registry, Hoffman donated blood stem cells to a 58 year-old man with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in November 2009. He is a health and exercise science major with a 3.255 GPA.
The Dr. Mary Rice Award is presented to a senior female athlete with two years of varsity experience and a GPA over 3.0. The recipient must possess excellence in skills, attitude and dedication. A team captain, Babice (sr. Groveville, NJ/Steinert) led the Profs with 54 points on 21 goals and 12 assists. In the NCAA statistics, she finished eighth in points per game (2.84), 10th in total points, 16th in goals (1.105) and assists (0.63) per game, 19th in total assists and 20th in total goals. Babice tied the University’s single game record for goals in a game (four) and broke the mark for points in a game (nine) against Montclair State University. She is Rowan’s record holder for points in a season (54) and goals (57) and points in the career (138). In 54 career games, Babice compiled 138 points with 57 goals and 24 assists.
This season, she was a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/Performance Subaru and D3soccer.com All-America first team selection. Babice was named the NJAC Offensive Player of the Year and to the All-Conference first team for the third straight time. She received NSCAA South Atlantic All-Region first team and ECAC Metro/Upstate All-Star Team honors. Babice’s academic accolades include: NSCAA Women’s College Scholar All-America and All-East Region and College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA)/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America and All-District II first team and Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Team. A Rowan Scholar-Athlete, she has a 3.787 GPA in health and exercise science.
This is the fifth year for the Rowan Prof Award. It is given to a male and female athlete that exemplify the meaning of the ROWAN tradition through Responsibility, Ownership, Winning, Accountability and No excuses. A team captain, Hershey (sr. Glen Rock, PA/Susquehannock) has set career marks this year with 26 points on 21 goals and five assists. In 28 career games, she has tallied 33 points, 26 goals, seven assists, 13 ground balls, five caused turnovers and four draw controls. Hershey earned NJAC All-Academic honorable mention in 2009 and 2010. She is a Rowan-Scholar Athlete majoring in business marketing and entrepreneurship.
Malone (jr. Sewell, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) swam the Profs’ top times in the 50 (21.16) and 100 (46.37) yard freestyles. He set the school record in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:42.55 at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Malone received NJAC All-Conference second team honors as part of Rowan’s 400 yard freestyle relay. In three season, he is a seven time All-Conference honoree. A member of SAAC, Malone is a liberal studies: math and science major.
The Distinguished Service Award is given in recognition and appreciation of outstanding contributions and support of the student-athletes and athletic department at Rowan University. Chin is the acting dean and an associate professor in the College of Engineering. He has served as a member of the University’s faculty since 1997. Hogan is the general manager of the University’s award winning radio station, Rowan Radio 89.7 WGLS-FM.
The Athletic Director’s Scholar-Athlete Award is given to the male and female athlete with the highest GPA. The athlete must have completed four semesters of college and be an active contributor on a varsity team. Hoxworth (jr. Vineland, NJ/home schooled) is majoring in art with a 4.0 GPA. He ran a season best time of 31:34.63 at the NJAC Cross Country Championships. This year, Hoxworth’s top times in outdoor track are 52.71 and 2.04.94 in the 400 and 800 meters respectively. He is a Rowan Scholar-Athlete.
A team captain, Knorr (sr. Monroeville, NJ/Delsea Reg.) has a 3.902 GPA in elementary education/American studies. She has appeared in 15 games and has a 1.83 ERA. In 23.0 innings, she has only allowed six earned runs with 22 strikeouts. In 31 career games, Knorr is 3-2 with two saves and a 1.81 ERA. She has struck out 43 batters in 69.2 innings. In 2010, Knorr garnered Girls Got Game/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Scholar-Athlete honors. She is also a Rowan Scholar-Athlete.
