MIDDLETOWN, CT – The Rowan University men’s and women’s indoor track teams both won the Collegiate Track Conference Championships on Saturday. The men scored 123 points among 19 teams and the women totaled 136 points out of 21 schools. The meet was held at Wesleyan University.
The Rowan women took first place in the four relays – 4x200 (1:47.57), 4x400 (4:07.97), 4x800 (9:55.94) and distance medley (13:01.13). The 4x200 meter relay included Heidi DeGuzman (jr. Central Islip, NJ/Pennsauken), Jacqui Nisbett (jr. Woodbury, NJ/Woodbury), Jessica Carlson (fr. Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Reg.) and Kayla Leahey (fr. Keansburg, NJ/Warwick Valley). Leahey, Nisbett, Amirah Muneer (jr. Ewing, NJ/Ewing) and Tiffany Chamberlain (so. Burlington, NJ/Burlington Twp.) made up the 4x400. Grace Kaler (fr. Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany Hills), Alli Catenacci (sr. Mullica Hill, NJ/Kingsway Reg.), Samantha Stapleton (fr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) and Jena Peacock (jr. Williamstown, NJ/Our Lady of Mercy Academy) ran on the 4x800 meter relay. The distance medley relay consisted of Catenacci, Leahey, Stapleton and Peacock.
Jamie Thompson (fr. Monmouth Jct., NJ/South Brunswick) was the winner in the 55 meter hurdles in 8.40 which was a school record. Her time was also a NCAA provisional (8.55). In the trials, she broke the mark with a time of 8.47. Last week, Thompson tied the University record (8.54) at the Frank Colden Invitational. Thompson also took first in the long jump with a leap of 17’ 2.75” (5.25 meters). Leahey finished first in the pole vault with a height of 10’ 6” (3.20 meters).
Peacock came in first (5:08.72) in the one mile. DeGuzman had a second place (7.40) in the 55 meters while Catenacci was second (1:22.94) in the 500 meters. Carlson took third in the triple jump with 34’ 11.25” (10.65 meters) and she was sixth in the long jump (15’ 9”, 4.80 meters). Sam Kamper (fr. Middletown, NJ/Middletown N.) finished fourth in the high jump (5’ 2.25”, 1.58 meters). Jess Lomanaco (fr. Blackwood, NJ/Triton Reg.) had a fifth place in the shot put with 36’ 0.75” (10.99 meters). In the 55 meter hurdles, Nisbett was fourth (8.85) followed by Chamberlain fifth (8.94). Chamberlain also had a fourth place (1:01.58) in the 400 meters and Muneer was eighth (1:02.80). Kaler and Joy Hanke (so. Cranford, NJ/Cranford) were sixth (20:06.88) and seventh (20:11.32) respectively in the 5000 meters.
The Prof men were the winners in the 4x400 meter (3:26.93) and distance medley (10:30.38) relays. The 4x400 was the last event of the day and the team of Ali Ejaz (fr. Glassboro, NJ/Glassboro), Jayce Maxwell (jr. Toms River, NJ/Monsignor Donovan), Taylor Purdue (so. Highland Lakes, NJ/Vernon Twp.) and Demetrius Rooks (so. Galloway, NJ/Absegami) clinched the championship for the men. The distance medley relay consisted of Will Smith (fr. Cranford, NJ/Cranford), Josh McGriff (so. Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central Reg.), Mike Carotenuto (so. Port Monmouth, NJ/Middletown N.) and Eric DuBois (jr. Pittsgrove, NJ/A.P. Schalick). The 4x200 meter relay came in second (1:33.46) with Marcus Lee (so. Vineland, NJ/Vineland), McGriff, Brandon Taylor (so. Woodstown, NJ/Woodstown) and Ejaz.
Pierre James (so. Somerset, NJ/Franklin) won the shot put with a toss of 52’ 1.75” (15.89 meters). His throw was better than the NCAA provisional (51’ 5.5”, 15.68 meters), he had at the Collegeville Invitational (Jan. 21). The NCAA provisional stands at 50’ 10.25” (15.50 meters). Kyle Hayes (sr. Pt. Pleasant, NJ/Pt. Pleasant Boro) recorded a first place in the long jump with 22’ 7” (6.88 meters). Jake McCormack (jr. Cliffwood, NJ/Matawan Reg.) ran a winning time of 15:51.67 in the 5000 meters. DuBois finished second (8:42.09) in the 3000 meters while Brian Quilty (sr. Brick, NJ/Saint Rose) came in fifth (9:13.94).
In the 400 meters, Rooks and Purdue were second (50.98) and third (51.97) respectively. Joe Mineo (so. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) had a height of 6’ 0” (1.83 meters) in the high jump for third place. Carotenuto took third (4:30.87) in the one mile run and Smith was sixth (4:35.20). Taylor had a fifth place (6.64) in the 55 meters and Benjamin Bradley (sr. Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany Hills) was sixth (8.41) in the 55 meter hurdles. Adam Diekewicz (fr. Glassboro, NJ/Glassboro) came in fifth (13’ 5.25”, 4.10 meters) in the pole vault. Joe Carmichael (so. Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken) finished sixth in the shot put (46’ 0.5”, 14.03 meters) followed by Frank Visconti (so. Berlin, NJ/Eastern Reg.) seventh (45’ 9.75”, 13.96 meters).
Brian Makinson (sr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) totaled 2942 points in the pentathlon for third place. He took second in the long jump (19’ 0.5”, 5.8 meters) and the 1000 meters (3:03.32) and tied for second in the high jump (6’ 1.25”, 1.86 meters). Makinson finished third (8.73) in the 55 meter hurdles and had a fourth place (29’ 7.25”, 9. 02 meters) in the shot put.
Next week, Rowan travels to the Armory on Sunday, February 20 for the New Jersey Athletic Conference Championships at 3 p.m.
