GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University men’s soccer team had a 2-0 win over Rhode Island College in the championship game of the Rowan Soccer Invitational on Saturday night.
Rowan is 3-0 overall, while Rhode Island has a 1-2 record. Earlier on Saturday, St. Joseph’s College (LI) defeated Berkeley College, 1-0 in the consolation game. On Friday, Rowan beat St. Joseph’s, 5-1 and Rhode Island had a 4-1 win over Berkeley.
The Profs were led by midfielder Joe Parella (jr. Howell, NJ/Howell) with two goals. Midfielders Cristhian Gonzalez (jr. Piscataway, NJ/Calasenz (Colombia)) and Andrew Brawner (so. Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) each picked up one assist.
Rowan took 12 shots, while Rhode Island had seven. Profs’ goalkeeper Charlie Cunliffe (sr. Lakewood, NJ/Lakewood) made two saves for his second shutout of the season. Goalkeeper Nic Clark (jr. East Bridgewater, MA/East Bridgewater) stopped three shots for the Anchormen.
Parella’s first goal came at 15:41 in the first period. He hit a one-timer on a pass from Gonzalez that hit off the far post and into the net. At 71:22 in the second half, Brawner took a shot that rebounded off the crossbar and Parella headed it in for the goal.
Gonzalez was chosen the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. For Rowan, midfielders Ryan Gordon (so. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.) and Andrew Ocbo (sr. Sicklerville, NJ/Winslow Twp.), Brawner, Cunliffe and Parella earned All-Tournament Team honors. Rhode Island midfielder Louis Tavares (sr. East Providence, RI/East Providence), forward Mike Patriarca (jr. Warren, RI/Mt. Hope) and back Corey Carvalho (sr. Darmouth, MA/Dartmouth), St. Joseph’s backs Dylan Evans (so. Bohemia, NY/St. John the Baptist) and Kamil Sadowski (sr. Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) and Berkeley midfielder Manuel Guzman (jr. Queens, NY/Martin Van Buren) were also All-Tournament selections.
Rowan travels to Eastern University on Wednesday, September 8 for a 4 p.m. game.
