GLASSBORO, NJ – Rowan University defeated St. Joseph’s College (LI), 5-1 in the first game of the Rowan Soccer Invitational on Friday night.

Rowan improves to 2-0, while St. Joseph’s has a 0-1 record. In the second game on Friday, Berkeley College plays Rhode Island College at 8 p.m. The loser of the Berkeley/Rhode Island game faces St. Joseph’s on Saturday, September 4 at 6 p.m. in the consolation game. The winner will take on Rowan in the championship at 8 p.m.

The Profs were led by midfielder Nick Bolton (fr. Dover, DE/Dover) with two goals and one assist. Midfielder Ryan Gordon (so. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.) added one goal and two assists. Midfielder John Loiodice (sr. Brick, NJ/Brick Mem.) contributed with one goal and assist, while forward Andres Vargas (fr. Green Village, NJ/Chatham) had one goal. Forwards Frank Renna (jr. Paramus, NJ/Paramus) and Joe Parella (jr. Howell, NJ/Howell) dished two and one assist respectively.

Back Julian Barreiros (jr. West Babylon, NY/West Babylon) scored the Golden Eagles’ lone goal. Forward Stephan Zaech (sr. Farmingville, NY/Sachem East) picked up the assist.

Rowan took 15 shots, while St. Joseph’s had 14. Goalkeeper Charlie Cunliffe (sr. Lakewood, NJ/Lakewood) played the first 64:58 in the Profs’ net and made two saves. Goalkeeper Michael Fanz-Huster (so. Waterford, NJ/Hammonton) turned away four shots in the final 25:02. Golden Eagles’ goalkeeper Peter Ryan (so. Sayville, NY/Sayville) stopped four shots.

Gordon put Rowan ahead 1-0 with a goal at 11:46 in the first period. He found the left side of the net on a pass from Parella and Bolton. At 23:50, Bolton scored on a feed from Renna to give the Profs a 2-0 halftime advantage. St. Joseph’s got on the scoreboard at 54:42 in the second stanza. Barreiros blasted a shot from Zaech into the back of the net. Bolton added a goal on a direct kick at 56:13 to increase the lead to two (3-1). Vargas’ goal came at 64:58 with assists from Gordon and Loiodice. With 19:57 remaining, Loiodice kicked the ball into the goal and Gordon and Renna each earned an assist.
