GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rhode Island College men’s soccer team had a 4-1 victory over Berkeley College in the opening round of the Rowan Soccer Invitational on Friday night.
Rhode Island has a 1-1 record, while it was Berkeley’s first game of the season. Earlier on Friday, Rowan topped St. Joseph’s College (LI), 5-1. The tournament continues on Saturday, September 4 with Berkeley playing St. Joseph’s at 6 p.m. in the consolation game. Rhode Island takes on Rowan in the championship at 8 p.m.
The Anchormen were led by forward Mike Patriarca (jr. Warren, RI/Mt. Hope) with two goals. Back Anthony Mirafiore (jr. Stratford, CT/Bunnell) contributed with one goal. Forward Bruno Costa (jr. Pawtucket, RI/Tolman) and midfielder Jerson Hernandez (fr. Johnston, RI/Johnston) each had one assist. Rhode Island also had an own goal. Back Waqas Afgan (fr. Oslo, Norway) scored the Knights’ only goal.
Rhode Island took 11 shots, while Berkeley had 10. Goalkeeper Nic Clark (jr. East Bridgewater, MA/East Bridgewater) made two saves for the Anchormen. Knights’ goalkeeper Camilo Montes (fr. Bayside, NY/Bayside) stopped five shots.
Berkeley went up 1-0 after Afgan converted a penalty kick at 5:05 in the first period. Patriarca tied the score (1-1) with his first goal at 26:36. Costa picked up the assist. At 31:03, Patriarca found the net again to put Rhode Island ahead, 2-1 at the intermission. In the second half, Mirafiore knocked in a pass from Hernandez at 47:11 to increase the lead to two (3-1). The Anchormen scored on an own goal at 56:20.
