MONTCLAIR , NJ – Running back Chris D’Andrea ran for 128 yards and one touchdown to lead 23rd ranked Montclair State to a 26-7 win over Rowan University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Saturday.
The Red Hawks improve to 2-0 overall, while the Profs have a 1-1 record. It was the first conference game for both teams. D’Andrea (sr. Union, NJ/Union) carried the ball 14 times and averaged 9.1 yards per attempt. Running back A.J. Scoppa (fr. New Milford, NJ/New Milford) added 73 yards and one touchdown on 14 rushes. Quarterback Tom Fischer (jr. Livingston, NJ/Livingston) completed 13 of 24 passes for 192 yards and two touchdowns. Wide receiver Byron Lewin (jr. Carteret, NJ/Carteret) made eight receptions for 92 yards and one touchdown. Wideout Bobby Roesing (fr. Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus) had a 45 yard touchdown catch.
Red Hawks’ linebacker Ed Kirschenbaum (sr. Lake Como, NJ/Manasquan) recorded a game-high 12 tackles (seven solo, five assisted). He also had one tackle for a loss (-1 yard) and one pass breakup. Defensive backs Mario McLean (sr. Boonton, NJ/Montville) and Chad Faulcon (jr. Cranford, NJ/Cranford) each made nine stops. Defensive lineman Shaun Bach (sr. Upper Saddle River, NJ/Northern Highlands) compiled six tackles (five solo, one assisted) and two sacks (-10 yards). Defensive back Gary Knoeppel (jr. West Long Branch, NJ/Shore Reg.) broke up three passes.
For Rowan, quarterback Kenny Brock (fr. Burlington, NJ/Burlington Twp.) threw for 63 yards, completing seven of 28 pass attempts. He also rushed for 72 yards on 16 carries. Running back Keith Corcoran (so. Atlantic City, NJ/St. Joseph (Hammonton)) ran for 66 yards on 18 touches. Running back Steve Hevalow (jr. Galloway, NJ/Absegami) followed with 58 yards and one touchdown on 13 attempts.
Linebacker Dean Hammel (jr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) posted 11 tackles (six solo, five assisted) and two tackles for a loss (-2 yards). Defensive end Matt Hoffman (sr. Burlington, NJ/Burlington Twp.) collected eight stops (seven solo, one assisted), four tackles for a loss (-32 yards), three sacks (-31 yards) and recovered one fumble. Cornerback Husain Shakir (sr. Camden, NJ/Woodrow Wilson) and safety Jack Buckley (jr. Phillipsburg, NJ/Phillipsburg) had one interception apiece.
Montclair State went ahead 7-0 at 11:30 in the first quarter following an 89 yard touchdown run by D’Andrea. Fischer threw a 35 yard hook and latter touchdown pass as time expired in the second period for a 14-0 halftime advantage. He tossed a 10 yard pass to Lewin who pitched the ball to Roesing, who took it 35 yards for the touchdown. The Red Hawks started on their own 47 yard line after Rowan turned the ball over on downs. Fischer went four for four in the drive, totaling 64 yards.
In the third stanza, Fischer connected with Lewin for a 30 yard touchdown at 1:15. The two-point conversion attempt failed to make the score, 20-0. Montclair State got the ball on the Rowan 35 yard line after a catching interference call on the Profs’ punt. Lewin had a five yard run before the touchdown.
Rowan got on the scoreboard at 14:55 in the fourth on a four yard touchdown carry by Hevalow. The Profs started on the Red Hawks’ 16 yard line after Hoffman recovered a fumble. Brock had a 12 yard run to set up the score. At 5:31, Scoppa ran the ball into the end zone from two yards out and the two-point conversion attempt was no good. Rowan turned the ball over on downs and Montclair State started on its own 13 yard line. Scoppa rushed for 55 yards on five carries and Fischer completed one pass for 32 yards in the drive.
