PHILADELPHIA, PA – Six Rowan University student-athletes were chosen to the
Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Teams for the spring season.
Catcher Steph Taraschi (sr. Mt. Ephraim, NJ/Audubon) and center fielder Nicolina Veneziano (so. Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) were named to the Academic All-Area Softball Team. Amirah Muneer (so. Ewing, NJ/Ewing) and Sean Biehn (sr. Edgewater Park, NJ/Burlington City) were selected to the Women’s and Men’s Track and Field Academic All-Area Teams respectively. Midfielder Alli Dickey (jr. Stevensville, MD/Kent Island) and defender Kaitlyn Molzon (sr. Howell, NJ/Saint Rose) collected Women’s Lacrosse Academic All-Area Team honors.
The
Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area teams are voted on by the sports information offices at the 28 institutions in the Philadelphia metropolitan area. In order to be eligible, a student-athlete must be a sophomore, junior or senior and have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher.
A team captain, Taraschi posted a .325 batting average. She led the team with 12 doubles and was second with 24 RBIs. Taraschi scored 20 runs and hit four home runs and one triple. She received New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) All-Conference first team, National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) East All-Region second team and Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Metro All-Star Team honors. She was a NJAC All-Academic second team and College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA)/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District II third team selection. Taraschi is a Rowan Scholar-Athlete with a 3.785 GPA in health and exercise science/special education.
Veneziano led the Profs in hitting (.377), RBIs (28), runs scored (37), total bases (93) and slugging percentage (.715). She registered five doubles, six triples and nine homers. Veneziano also stole 10 bases in 10 attempts. She was chosen the NJAC and ECAC Metro Player of the Year and to the All-Conference first team. Veneziano garnered NFCA East All-Region and CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District II first team and ECAC Metro All-Star Team honors. She is a Rowan Scholar-Athlete and received NJAC All-Academic honorable mention. Veneziano is majoring in health and exercise science with a 3.628 GPA.
Muneer is a health and exercise science major with a 3.517 GPA. During this year’s outdoor track and field season, she ran Rowan’s top times in the 200 (26.32) and 400 (59.55) meters. Muneer had the third best time in the 100 meters (13.25). At the NJAC Championships, she ran on the first place 4x400 meter relay (4:04.87), second place 4x100 meter relay (48.73) and took third place in the 200 meters (26.34) to earn All-Conference first and second team and honorable mention. In indoor track, Muneer had a career best time of 1:23.00 in the 500 meters. She compiled season bests in the 60 (8.36), 200 (26.99) and 400 (1:01.20) meters. Muneer placed third in the 400 meters (1:00.57) at the conference championships for All-Conference honorable mention. She was a member of the Profs’ record setting 4x400 meter relay (4:06.79) at the ECAC Championships. Muneer earned NJAC All-Academic honorable mention. She is a Rowan Scholar-Athlete and attended the NCAA Career in Sports Forum.
Biehn took second place in the javelin at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a throw of 204’ 5” (62.31 meters) to earn his second straight All-America honor. At the 2009 national championships, he finished fourth with a toss of 200’ 1” (60.98 meters). Biehn won the javelin at the NJAC Championships with a conference meet record of 214’ 6” (65.38 meters) for All-Conference first team honors. He was chosen the NJAC Outstanding Male Field Athlete of the Meet. Biehn also won the Penn Invitational, Lions’ Invitational, Princeton Elite Meet and Lions’ Last Chance Meet. He was a CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District II second team selection. Biehn received NJAC All-Academic honorable mention and was a Rowan Scholar-Athlete. He is a music education major with a 3.512 GPA.
Dickey tied for first on the team with 42 points, 30 goals and 12 assists. She led the Profs with 41 ground balls and was second with 46 draw controls. Dickey also caused 17 turnovers. She was named to the NJAC All-Conference and Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Boardwalk All-Region first teams and the ECAC Metro/South Region All-Star second team. Dickey was chosen to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District II third team and earned NJAC All-Academic honorable mention. A Rowan Scholar-Athlete, she has a 3.76 GPA in mechanical engineering.
A team captain, Molzon was Rowan’s defensive leader. She compiled 26 ground balls, 15 caused turnovers and three draw controls. Molzon was named to the IWLCA Boardwalk All-Region second team. She received NJAC All-Conference and All-Academic honorable mention. Molzon was selected to play in the IWLCA Division III North-South Senior All-Star Game. A Rowan Scholar-Athlete, she is an elementary education/history major with a 3.65 GPA.
