GLASSBORO, NJ – Rowan University has three student-athletes that have qualified for the NCAA Division III Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The national championships are scheduled for Thursday, May 27 through Saturday, May 29 at Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, OH.
Sean Biehn (sr. Edgewater Park, NJ/Burlington City), Sean Corey (sr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill E.) and Matt Tholis (so. Montgomery, NJ/Montgomery) will compete in the javelin on Thursday at 1 p.m. The top eight finishers in each event earn All-American honors.
Biehn qualified for nationals with a throw of 214’ 6” (65.38 meters) while Corey had a toss of 215’ 3” (65.61 meters). Tholis registered a qualifier of 203’ 2” (61.93 meters). Among the 16 national competitors, Corey is third overall followed by Biehn fourth and Tholis is 10th. The NCAA automatic is 205’ 1” (62.50 meters) for the javelin while the provisional stands at 189’ 7” (57.80 meters).
“Sean (Corey) started the season with a great win at Wake Forest,” said coach Bill Fritz. “He had a little injury problem but came on strong at the conference championships. Sean (Biehn) is coming on at the right time of the year. Both Seans will throw far at nationals.”
“Matt qualified last year but just missed the cut to go,” continued Fritz. “He has outstanding technique and is tough minded. I expect him to do well. Matt is in flight one with Sean Corey while Sean Biehn is in flight two.”
This year, Biehn won the javelin at the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championships. He threw 214’ 6” (65.38 meters) which was a conference meet record and a NCAA automatic. Biehn also had first places at the Penn Invitational (197’ 8”, 60.24 meters), the Lions’ Invitational (197’ 3”, 60.12 meters), the Princeton Elite Meet (204’ 1”, 62.20 meters) and the Lions’ Last Chance Meet (203’ 10”, 62.14 meters). He finished third at the Rowan Open (199’ 7”, 60.84 meters).
Biehn earned 2010 NJAC All-Conference first team honors and he was named the Outstanding Male Field Athlete at the conference championships. He was tabbed the NJAC Field Athlete of the Week three times. At last year’s NCAA Championships, Biehn was an All-American with a fourth place throw of 200’ 1’ (60.98 meters).
Corey recorded first places at the Wake Forest Open (215’ 3”, 65.61 meters), the Towson Invitational (200’ 10”, 61.22 meters) and the Rowan Open (206’, 62.78 meters). He came in second at the Penn Invitational (189’ 7”, 57.79 meters) and the NJAC Championships (203’ 5”, 62.0 meters). In addition, Corey finished third at the Princeton Elite Meet (198’ 11”, 60.62 meters) and fourth at the Collegiate Track Conference (CTC) Championships (165’ 3”, 50.36 meters).
Corey’s second place finish at the conference championships earned him a spot on the NJAC All-Conference second team. During the season, he was named the NJAC Field Athlete of the Week one time. In 2008, Corey competed at the national championships and his best throw was 186’ 3” (56.76 meters).
Tholis came in first at the CTC Championships with a throw of 179’ 7” (54.75 meters). He took second at the Rowan Open (203’ 2”, 61.93 meters) and third at the NJAC Championships (199’ 1”, 60.68 meters). He finished fourth at the Lions’ Invitational (187’ 10”, 57.26 meters) and fifth at the Princeton Elite Meet (189’ 6”, 57.77 meters). Tholis earned NJAC All-Conference honorable mention.
