LAKELAND, FL – The Rowan University baseball team defeated Curry College (MA), 6-5 on Saturday night. The game was played at Tenoroc High School.

Rowan improves to 4-3, while Curry has a 0-1 record. Right hander Ben Miller (so. Fair Haven, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven Reg.) picked up the win in relief. Righty John O’Hara (jr. Clayton, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his first save of the year. Left hander Mike Hughes took the loss for the Colonels.

The Profs were led by left fielder Scott Weaver (jr. Ledgewood, NJ/Roxbury) with one hit (three at bats), two RBIs, one run scored and a double. Second baseman Dave Lenig (sr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville Mem.) posted a double and scored twice. First baseman Matt Johanson (sr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) was one for four with one RBI. Center fielder Matt Citro (jr. Bloomsbury, NJ/Phillipsburg), third baseman Brad Woodend (jr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) and shortstop Marc Magliaro (so. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) all scored once.

For Curry, left fielder Tim Sweeney went two for four with a one run scored and a double. Center fielder Jesse Briunsma recorded one RBI and one run scored. Second baseman David Stevens had one hit (two at bats), one run scored and a double. Designated hitter Matt Rodriguez contributed with a double and a RBI. Right fielder Matt Drew knocked in one run, while shortstop Carlos Cornejo and catcher Brad Hawn each scored once.

Rowan took at 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Lenig doubled and came home on an error. Johanson’s single plated Weaver. Curry went ahead 4-2 after getting one run in the second and three in the third. Hawn scored on a ground out in the second. Cornejo crossed the plate on a fielder’s choice and Briunsma and Sweeney both scored on an error.

Curry added one run in the bottom of the eighth inning for a 5-2 advantage. Rodriguez doubled bringing Stevens home. In the top of the ninth, Woodend was hit by a pitch, Magliaro singled and Citro walked to load the bases with two outs. Magliaro and Woodend scored on an error with Lenig at bat. Weaver followed with a two RBI double that knocked in Lenig and Citro.
