SOUTH ORANGE, NJ – Rowan University women’s soccer player Krista Verzi was honored as a Woman of the Year by the New Jersey Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (NJAIAW) on Sunday, February 7. The Women of the Year honorees were recognized at a luncheon prior to the Seton Hall University women’s basketball game against St. John’s University. Due to inclement weather, Verzi was unable to attend the event.
A four-year starter in the midfield, Verzi (sr. Delran, NJ/Delran) was a team captain in 2008 and 2009. In 73 career games, she compiled 46 points with 17 goals and 16 assists. Verzi had four game-winning goals. She earned New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) All-Conference first team honors in 2008 and 2009. This season, Verzi was named to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Metro All-Star second team. She received NJAC All-Academic Team honorable mention in 2007, 2008 and 2009.
A Rowan Scholar-Athlete, Verzi has a 3.754 grade point average in English and secondary education. She is in the University’s honors program. Verzi is a member of the University’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and serves as the SAAC social chair. Verzi is actively involved in several service projects including: a 3v3 basketball tournament to raise money for Rowan’s Clean and Green program, helping at the Ronald McDonald House and participating in Coins for Cancer. She was a volunteer trainer for Delran (2006) and Glassboro (2008) youth soccer. Verzi has participated in the New Jersey Tournament of Champions Soccer Clinic, Student-Athlete Bid-A-Date, SAAC food and toy drives and visited a community center on the women’s soccer team’s trip to Costa Rica in 2009. She is also involved as a Yoplait Yogurt for Breast Cancer Research member.
