Rowan Starts Indoor Track Season at the NYC Gotham Cup

NEW YORK, NY – The Rowan University men’s and women’s track teams started the indoor season at the New York City Gotham Cup on Friday. The meet was held at the Armory Track and Field Center.

Kyle Hayes (jr. Pt. Pleasant, NJ/Pt. Pleasant Boro) took second place in the seeded long jump with a leap of 23’ 1.75” (7.05 meters) which is a NCAA provisional qualifier. The NCAA provisional stands at 22’ 8.5” (6.92 meters). Hayes has the second best qualifying jump in Division III so far this season. Kevin Gauntt (sr. Marlton, NJ/Seneca) took 10th place in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.58.

In the unseeded long jump, Brian Makinson (jr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) came in 19th place with 19’ 4” (5.89 meters). Brian Quilty (jr. Brick, NJ/Saint Rose) was 29th (4:39.93) in the unseeded one mile.

The men’s 4x800 meter relay had a 13th place finish (8:39.77) with Daniel Collier (sr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson), Nick Huddy (jr. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.), Tom Austin (so. Manuta, NJ/West Deptford) and Matt Crosta (so. Toms River, NJ/Monsignor Donovan). The 4x400 meter relay was 19th with a time of 3:29.37. The relay team included Benjamin Bradley (jr. Morris Plains, NJ/Parsippany Hills), Makinson, Josh McGriff (fr. Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) and Jayce Maxwell (so. Toms River, NJ/Monsignor Donovan.

In the women’s seeded one mile, Jenn Rawls (fr. Runnemede, NJ/Highland Reg.) finished fourth (5:11.82) followed by Jena Peacock (so. Williamstown, NJ/Our Lady of Mercy Academy) fifth (5:15.77). Rawls' time was a school record. She broke the mark of 5:12.13 by Linda Vaughan in 1990. Rachel Byrne (fr. Shamong, NJ/Holy Cross) took eighth place in the unseeded 800 meters with a time of 2:22.72. Jacqui Nisbett (jr. Woodbury, NJ/Woodbury) had a ninth place in the unseeded long jump with 15’ 5.5” (4.71 meters). Heidi DeGuzman (so. Central Islip, NY/Pennsauken) was 12th in the 60 meters with a time of 8.02. 

Lisa Jones (sr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) finished 16th in the 1000 meters in 3:12.77. The women’s distance medley relay took fifth place in 12:40.75 which was a school record. The old record was 12:44.72 in 1990. The relay members were Rawls, Christina Huynh (fr. Lake Hiawatha, NJ/Parsippany), Jones and Peacock.

The 4x800 meter relay came in 10th (10:22.51) with the team of Alivia Royds (fr. Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape), Raneeka Doharty (so. Orange, NJ/Orange), Byrne and Eileen O’Mara (so. Haddonfield, NJ/Haddon Twp.). The 4x400 meter relay took 11th place with a time of 4:09.28 which was a school record (4:10.45, 2009). The relay consisted of Tiffany Chamberlain (fr. Burlington, NJ/Burlington Twp.), Amirah Muneer (so. Ewing, NJ/Ewing), Beverlee Brownlee (fr. Willingboro, NJ/Willingboro) and Nisbett.

Next week, Rowan travels to Lehigh University on Saturday, January 23 for the Covert Classic that starts at 10 a.m.
