Union hangs on for 8-7 win over Rowan in the first round of the NCAA Championship Tournament

SCHENECTADY, NY – The Union College women’s lacrosse team held on for an 8-7 win over Rowan University in the first round of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament on Wednesday.

Union (15-3) advances to the regional at Franklin & Marshall College (17-1) on Saturday-Sunday, May 9-10. The Dutchwomen play the Diplomats at 11:30 a.m. In the other regional game, St. John Fisher College (11-6) meets the first round winner between Tufts University and Drew University at 2:30 p.m. The region final is at 1 p.m. on Sunday. The national semifinals and final are scheduled for Saturday-Sunday, May 16-17 at Donald J. Kerr Stadium in Salem, VA.

Attack/midfielder Chelsea Charette led Union with two goals and one assist. Attacks Kristin Joyce and Casey Dianni each contributed with one goal and one assist. Midfielders Allie Cuozzo, and Keelin Skurek and attacks Jill LaForest and Abby Stohler all had one goal.

Rowan ends the season with an 8-9 record. It was the Profs’ seventh appearance and second straight in the NCAA Championship Tournament. Attacks Lauren Crennan (sr. Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts), Tori Hart (jr. Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) and Alayna Morris (jr. Columbus, NJ/Northern Burlington Reg.) scored two goals apiece. Midfielder Kelly Angstadt (sr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) added one goal and one assist. Attack Alli Dickey (so. Stevensville, MD/Kent Island) assisted on two goals and midfielder Carly Welsh (sr. Allenwood, NJ/Wall) had one.

Union took 23 shots and Rowan totaled 19. For the Dutchwomen, goalie Cat Ruggiero stopped 10 shots. Prof goalie Alicia Mannino (sr. Richboro, PA/Conwell-Egan Catholic) made nine saves in 56:51 and Kerry Pehnke (fr. West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro N.) was in the goal for 3:09.

The score was tied at six with 18:42 left in the game. Four minutes later, Charette gave Ursinus a 7-6 advantage with an unassisted goal. Joyce scored to lead 8-6 at 51:23. Hart cut the deficit to one with a goal that was assisted by Welsh. With nine seconds remaining, Ruggerio saved a free position shot to seal the victory.

The final period started with an unassisted goal by Dianni that made the score 6-4. Crennan scored 33 seconds later with a pass from Angstadt. Morris tied the game at six with her second goal assisted by Dickey.

Crennan put the Profs on the scoreboard first with an unassisted goal 51 seconds into the game. Charette tied the score with a free position shot at 3:01. Hart hit the net on a pass by Dickey for a 2-1 advantage. Cuozzo made the score 2-2 with an assist from Joyce. Rowan took the lead for the third time on Angtadt’s unassisted goal and Stohler followed with a tying goal.

The two teams were scoreless for just over 14 minutes until Skurek gave Union its first lead of the game with a goal assisted by Charette. Morris tied the score at four with a free position goal and 2:55 was remaining. LaForest scored with two seconds on the clock that put the Dutchwomen up 5-4 at the intermission.
