Rowan Women Take Second and Men Are Sixth at CTC Championships

MIDDLETOWN, CT – The Rowan University men’s and women’s indoor track teams traveled to Wesleyan University for the Collegiate Track Conference Championships on Saturday. The women took second place out of 19 teams while the men finished sixth among 17 schools.

Tamara Jones (so. Camden, NJ/Woodrow Wilson) won the 400 meters in 58.62 which was a NCAA provisional (58.70). Her time broke the school record of 59.57 that she set earlier this season. In the 200 meter dash, Jones came in second (26.39) followed by Heidi DeGuzman (fr. Central Islip, NY/Pennsauken) third (26.49). DeGuzman also took third in the 55 meter dash with a time of 7.42.

For the men, Kyle Hayes (so. Pt. Pleasant, NJ/Pt. Pleasant Boro) recorded a NCAA provisional (22’ 10”, 6.96 meters) when he won the long jump. His distance of 23’ 2.75” (7.08 meters) was better than the NCAA provisional he recorded last week. Hayes took first in the long jump with 23’ (7.01 meters) at the Frank Colden Invitational (Feb. 7).

The women’s 4x200 meter relay had a winning time of 1:48.99 with Jones, Amirah Muneer (fr. Ewing, NJ/Ewing), DeGuzman and Amira Abdullah (fr. Erial, NJ/Timber Creek). The first place 4x800 meter relay (10:13.06) included Abdullah, Alli Catenacci (so. Mullica Hill, NJ/Kingsway Reg.), Lisa Jones (jr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) and Eileen O’Mara (fr. Haddonfield, NJ/Haddon Twp.). The 4x400 meter relay took second in 4:10.45 which broke the school record (4:12.73) from 1991. The relay included Tamara Jones, Muneer, DeGuzman and Catenacci. The distance medley relay with Lisa Jones, Muneer, Catenacci and O’Mara was second in 13:14.08.

Catenacci finished third in the 500 meters (1:22.96) and Lisa Jones had a third place in the one mile run (5:29.78). Muneer took fourth place in the 400 meters (1:00.94) and seventh in the 55 meter dash (7.71). Danielle Czohla (fr. Lafayette, NJ/High Point Reg.) was fourth in the 3000 meters (11:24.29) and Angela Patane (sr. Monroeville, NJ/Delsea Reg.) came in seventh (11:30.37). Lisa Jones and O’Mara were sixth (3:18.63) and seventh (3:20.38) respectively in the 1000 meter run. O’Mara was also sixth in the one mile run (5:36.03). Rose Johnson (fr. Willingboro, NJ/Holy Cross) came in seventh in the 55 meter hurdles (9.49). In the long jump, Tamara Jones took seventh with a leap of 15’ 6.75” (4.74 meters) and DeGuzman was ninth (15’, 4.57 meters).

The men’s 4x200 meter relay came in second (1:32.38) with Hayes, Jayce Maxwell (fr. Toms River, NJ/Monsignor Donovan), Julius Grayson (fr. Hempstead, NY/Hempstead) and Ja’Ron Morgan (fr. Burlington, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.).
The distance medley relay finished third with a time of 11:05.70. The relay members were Eric DuBois (fr. Pittsgrove, NJ/A.P. Schalick), Nick Huddy (jr. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.), Devon Hausmann (fr. Folsom, NJ/St. Joseph’s) and Jake McCormick (fr. Cliffwood, NJ/Matawan Reg.). The fourth place 4x800 meter relay (8:31.22) included Huddy, Mike Rivera (sr. Old Tappan, NJ/Northern Valley Old Tappan), Tom Austin (fr. Mantua, NJ/West Deptford) and McCormick. The 4x400 meter relay was seventh (3:34.30). The 4x400 consisted of Maxwell, Brian Makinson (so. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson), Grayson and Dan Collier (jr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson).

Kevin Gauntt (jr. Marlton, NJ/Seneca) finished third in the 55 meter hurdles (7.87). Jason Yanchuck (jr. Somerset, NJ/Franklin) had a fifth place in the shot put with a throw of 44’ 5.5” (13.55 meters). Maxwell was sixth in the 200 meter dash (23.24). Makinson took seventh place in the 400 meters (52.81). He was also seventh in the high jump with a height of 5’ 10.5” (1.79 meters). Rivera came in seventh in the one mile run (4:34.35). In the triple jump, Nehemiah Burney-Porter (jr. Scotch Plains, NJ/Scoth Plains-Fanwood) and Hayes finished seventh (42’ 10.25”, 13.06 meters) and eighth (42’ 1.25”, 12.83 meters) respectively.

Rowan will compete at the New Jersey Athletic Conference Championships on Monday, February 23. The conference championships will be held at the New York Armory starting at 5 p.m.
