Rowan Falls To Ithaca, 2-1 (OT) In Sectional of NCAA Championship Tournament

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA – The Rowan University women’s soccer team lost to Ithaca College (NY), 2-1 in overtime in the sectionals of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament on Saturday. The sectional is being held at Williams College.

Ithaca (16-4-2) will play The College of New Jersey (19-2-1) in the sectional final on Sunday at 1 p.m. The winner advances to the national semifinals. The semifinals and final are scheduled for Friday and Saturday, December 4 and 5 at the Blossom Soccer Stadium in San Antonio, TX.

In the first game, TCNJ defeated Williams College, 1-0. It was the first loss for Williams who ends the season with a 19-1 record. Rowan has a final record of 17-3-1. It was the Profs’ sixth appearance and fifth straight in the NCAA postseason.

Midfielder Amy Scheffer scored both of the Bombers’ goals. She is the team’s leading scorer with 16 goals and three assists for 35 points. This season, Scheffer was named the Empire 8 Offensive Player of the Year. Midfielder Caroline Jastremski contributed with one assist.

Rowan’s goal was scored by forward Jess Babice (jr. Groveville, NJ/Steinert). It was her 22nd goal and she finished the year with 50 points. Babice was selected the 2009 New Jersey Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year and to the All-Conference first team. Midfielder Marina Mangano (fr. Cape May Court House, NJ/Middle Twp.) had an ass ist.

Ithaca totaled 17 shots and Rowan took 10. For the Bombers, goalie Jessica Platt made three saves. In the Profs’ goal, Sarah Volkomer (sr. Glen Rock, NJ/Glen Rock) stopped five shots.

Scheffer recorded the game-winner at 96:44 on a header from 13 yards. She knocked in a cross on the left side from Jastremski. Babice tied the score with 8:28 remaining in regulation. She took a feed from Mangano and hit the upper right corner of the Bombers’ goal. At 58:10, Scheffer put Ithaca on the scoreboard with a shot inside the right post.
